It`s an unfortunate event, but I don`t blame the cop, it was self defense. The dog`s owner is mostly at fault for calling the cops and not putting the dog on a leash.

@Zismo how the hell do you come to that conclusion? He called them 3 hours prior to this incident. From what I`ve read the owner stated no one was in their house. Why come guns drawn and enter the premises with no one there then?

the whole time the dog had her ears down and tail wagging. she was just over excited. it was just a bad situation for everyone.

he should have at least killed the dog though. making the owner do it is cruel and unusual.

Good, he acted in an unprofessional manner and over reacted- not a good trait in an armed policeman!

The dog was right there. The cop saw the dog right there. The cop shouldn`t have gotten out.

If the dog had come running at the cop from out of nowhere and surprised him, then he would have a good argument for shooting the dog.

Also, pepper spray works great on dogs.

Good call. There was no reason for the deputy to execute the family dog.

The practice of always backing up an officer, no matter how bad a decision is, breeds an environment for cops who are all too willing to behave badly. A better measure of accountability is not only desirable, but necessary for a good police force.

Collegebound - Did you even read the whole story?

It doesn`t sound like you did.

It`s a little more than "oops!" like you put it. The homeowner was a victim. Then the cops show up and execute his dog. I know it`s just an animal, but many of us really truly care for those animals.

I couldn`t ever see a <50lb blue heeler kill a full grown male in the prime of his life. You`d have to be a complete moron to get killed by one. A bite on the leg or hand isn`t going to kill you. This officer completely over reacted. Once again quick to pull a trigger not a good response for an officer to have.

collegebound - Maybe you should consider having higher expectations from law enforcement. We expect them to make good decisions. This was a no-brainer.

Cop pulls up. There is a barking dog right in front of him. If he was scared of the dog, why did he step out of the car?
He could have waited a minute for the resident to show up. He could have even called on the phone or over the loud speaker.
It seems so amazingly simple. The average person would know better. A cop should be a bit smarter than the average person.

I can think of a half dozen better ways the situation could have been handled. Also, his joking and teasing of the victim shows his arrogance.

On one hand I feel bad that he lost his job.
On the other...I don`t think he was qualified for the job. If this very simple situation was too difficult for him to handle properly, he should not be a cop.

You seem to be the only one who disagrees.
