Interesting collection. Regarding #2, I just don`t get the practice of foot-binding, and the insistence at the time on unnaturally tiny feet for women. It was a cruel practice, and what can be appealing about a foot that is deliberately deformed?

jake, i may be instantly and mercilessly corrected on this, but i believe it was considered a status symbol at the time. a woman who couldn`t walk, was one who was wealthy enough to have servants care for anything that might require walking. she was so rich, she didn`t have to walk, and to prove it, she actually couldn`t.

dogfeet, you`re right, it definitely was a status symbol, or at least it eventually became a symbol of a woman`s wealthy state, regardless of the practice`s origins, about which there are different theories.

I meant I don`t see the aesthetic appeal. Look at photos of bound feet. It`s brutal.

Chinese bound foot was a national fetish. Foot needed to be broken many times, throughout the growth and later to thwart the bodies attempts to heal it.
Feet were infected and were puss filled. It is said that men liked to play with these little lotus feet and the smell of the rot was arousing to them.
    GAG.

regarding the one above the one man orchestra; The father on the left has what must be some form of congenital effects in his hands and feet. The two children seem to have inherited it, too.
