It was a perfect day on the ocean in mid-May when Julian German and his crew pulled up a lobster so big that no others could fit in the lobster trap.
It was a nice day, calm seas, sunny, perfect conditions. Everyone was pretty excited when we realized what it was, said German, who has captained the Mega Hawk out of Meteghan, N.S. for five years.
The jumbo weighed in at 23.2 pounds and is the largest that German has caught.
It looked like a piece of seaweed coming up because the big claw was just hanging out of the pot, it didnt fit in the rings. It wasnt until it was up on the rail, then everyone started taking pictures, said German.
Crewmembers used black electrical tape on the big claw to band it.
The giant took up a quarter of a crate and once dockside was transported to a restaurant in the United States where it will be stuffed and mounted on the wall as an ornament. German received $3 a pound for the jumbo. He says overall its been a good lobster season . . . except for the price.
That"s a lot of lobster sandwiches.
