Still have no idea why this number tells you about the universe

drawman61 - It doesn`t tell you about the universe. It tells you about a circles surface area compared to it`s diameter.

I don`t get the fascination either.

"A circle has infinite corners as apposed to having none."
No way a scientist said that. More like a stoner.

Actually its very true, Pi didn`t start out simply understanding a circle it could only be experimented on by constantly adding more sided geometric shapes to approximate the shape. It was a very hard thing to conceptualize.

Archimedes didn`t calculate the exact value of pi, but rather came up with a very close approximation. He used 96 sided polygons to come up with a value that fell between 3.1408 and 3.14285. The Chinese mathematician Zhu Chongzhi used a similar method to approximate the value of pi, using a 12,288 sided polygon. His best approximation was 355/113.
