Fluffy kitties: Just what the doctor ordered. Thanks, Peppy!

I`ve heard wonderful things about tuxedo cats, like the one in the first GIF. People tell me that the black cats with the white bibs tend to be especially friendly and sweet. Can anyone vouch for this? I`m thinking of getting a shalter cat.

Squrlz: Any kittah can be a sweetie pie. Some can be the devil incarnate. I`ve had both. We are on our fourth calico and they have all been sweet and two of them were feral kittens to boot. Go to the shelter, play with them, love `em up but importantly hold them. If they won`t be held move on. Thanks for saving one!
Oh and if you pick the wrong one they`re great in a stir fry. Just kidding!

Squrlz, all kittehs are different. I`ve had five, all different colors and all with different personalities. I had a female tortie that was an absolute sweetheart of a cuddle bug, though she scared the crap out of my dog. I had an all black cat who was very talkative, affectionate and would eat anything edible you gave her. My orange tabby has the most wonderful personality. She plays fetch and will bring you toys to toss when she wants to play. She knows that using her claws hurts, so she`s very gentle, gripping very gently on your hand for nibbles and she loves a good snuggle. She`s with my ex, now. My oldest is a white cat with a tabby tail and tabby markings on one of her back legs and over one of her ears. She is old and cranky, but loves her mama and is an excellent mouser. She can be aloof to strangers, but loves it when I open a book. It`s her favorite place to sit. The fifth is a gray tabby male who pissed on my clothes, constantly. I left him with my ex.

Squrlz: I just met one for the first time tonight! My friends are taking care of their son`s cat. He came partway downstairs to see what we were talking about and immediately accepted nosey rubs and neck scratches from me. Very outgoing and friendly. So I say "yes" based on one cat. 8-)

@Squrlz4: Posters below are correct! All cats can be very sweet or really rotten. Some breeds are known for certain traits, but most cats are "mixed" and they all have their own personalities.
Going to a shelter to find a kitty is good! Breeds are for rich folks who already have a couple of cats, I think.

Getting a cat who`s over 1 year old is good too: you can tell exactly what their personality is like. Kittens are great, and everyone wants them, so give an older cat a chance!!

@ Schecky, Ani, Carmium, and 5Cats: Thank you all for the information; I appreciate it. Amazing how much the personalities can differ, isn`t it? I sincerely hope I don`t get a "clothes pisser," Ani--that would be hard to deal with!

Based on what I`ve heard and what you guys are telling me here, I`m leaning toward a tuxedo cat from a shelter that`s older than one year. Do you guys have any thoughts on male vs. female?

I`m taking babysteps on this project, so it will probably be awhile before I adopt yet. The thought of being responsible for another creature for 10 to 20 years is a bit daunting. But I do think I need a kitty. :-)

Squrlz: Don`t matter cause if you rescue from a shelter the surgery is already done. Trick is to keep them from getting fat and lazy after the hormones are gone. My wife says I should walk our cats and I always say back, Oh you mean drag them up the hill?

Do you guys have any thoughts on male vs. female?
@Squrlz4: You`re on the right track! Especially for a first time cat owner? Kittens can be a handful!
As for male vs female: since they`re "fixed" there`s really not too much difference. I`ve see both genders be super mushy snuggly monkeys, or aloof, disinterested ill-tempered beasts.
I think (but it`s just an opinion) that fixed females tend towards the extremes, while fixed males are more "in the middle". The opposite of humans?
Mostly? Individual personalities over-rule other outward variables.

And feed your kitty GOOD, dry catfood! Like IAMs or MaxCat! Cheap food isn`t good in the long run.

Brushing teeth is also a good idea. Once a week from when they`re young & you`ll prevent late-life tooth problems!
