Doesn`t make me vote either way. Just makes me more intent on ignoring the extremists (of any party or opinion) shouting their views from the rooftops. The fact that an extremist liberal said something dumb shouldn`t be what makes you vote GOP any more than an extremist conservative saying something dumb should make me vote Democratic.

Interesting logic. So, considering the trillions in stimulus and Obamacare shouldn`t we all be in our liberal uber-utopia by now? Alarming idiocy on this one. All this did was convince me to keep voting for the GOP.

@5Cats,
I agree fully! I`m pretty liberal (note the small "L") and even I think it`s Liberal BS. There are places where money can be used to educate better (at least, I`d like to think so!) and thereby reduce some crime but, overall, this is Liberal (large "L" - ie: Liberals who have a specific agenda) feel good garbage.

Right, spending more money would stop crimes before they happen!
Liberal Crapola.

@pyk: If the blindfold is on, it doesn`t matter what colour the fuzzy handcuffs are ;-)

yeah but if the police were to use those resources to better prevent crime peoples would be crying about police-state problems.

kree_-
stop handcuffing everyone that gets arrested.
I was arrest once based on bogus charges by an ex girlfriend (was eventually thrown out).

The sheriff that showed up at my house was respectful, so was I. He apologized for it, I said `not your fault`. I rode to the metro jail in the front seat with him. The ONLY time I was hand-cuffed was once he pulled into the garage, regulations REQUIRE I be cuffed walking between car and booking. (he apologized for that).

I shook his hand and thanked him for handling it a profesional manner. He thanked me for being accomadating.

That` being said. Handcurffing is for the officers protection and should be used ANY time there is any doubt. It`s not like it`s a traumatizing experience.

I think a good first step would be to stop handcuffing everyone that gets arrested. While i agree handcuffs are needed in certain situations, a officer should be able to say "Sir, I am putting you under arrest, please get in the back seat of my automobile, so that I may take you down to the station for processing."

With some jurisdictions having conviction rates below 50%, that means we are treating more innocent people like criminals than there are criminals. Once we stop treating the general public like trash, then maybe there will be a movement to improve prison conditions.

Caning is much cheaper.

This could be true if we can see into the future and see who will commit crimes and get them into therapy.

The `war on drugs` needs to end. If that happened, we would see a very significant decrease in most types of crime - including murders, thefts, assaults, etc.

Around 85% of our current prison population is doing time for drug crimes, or for crimes committed with some connection to drugs.

Not only would most types of crime drop dramatically, but the economy wold receive a huge boost, and income taxes could even be lowered.

Decriminalize, but regulate and tax! Portugal has the right idea, and the Netherlands aren`t that far off, either.

Agreed, BS. You can`t "fix" some people no matter what. Those are the ones who need to be locked up for the safety of others.

So money can stop murders, rapes, thefts, assaults etc?

There`s likely at least some truth in that but it`s *way* too simplistic.

The difference between incarceration and incineration is only a matter of degrees.

Yes... because history has taught us that throwing money at problems, solves them.
