Stephen Hawking replaces the event horizon with his concept of an apparent horizon.

Well said; further to that he saved the idea. Up to this point the event horizon was not compatible with the General Theory of Relativity, which states that for an observer in a sealed container in free fall the universe would be the same everywhere. The event horizon did not fit this, and Hawking`s idea resolves the issue. It saves black holes, rather than killing them.

He didn`t kill off the idea, he expanded on it. Black holes exist but things sucked in get spewed out also.
