To all of you professing to not get why this is an issue:

This is why it is an issue. Just look at some of those images and still ask why that menu was a slap in the face.

You ALL should be very well aware of this historical FACT (at least you Americans should be) so you are either totally ignorant or being outright deceitful simply to bolster your own racism. Which is it?

lauriloo-
You make me embarrassed to be caucasian.
It`s already obvious that you ARE embarrassed to be caucasion, and suffer from delusions of white guilt. Everytime you interact with a black person you`re overcome by guilt over the possibility that you`ve mistreated them without knowing it.

You don`t even realize how racist your attitude is.

Part of that entire willful ignorance thang. All `feels`, no `facts.

We should all just pretend that blacks (excuse me, African-Americans), Indians (excuse me, Native Americans), and other hypersensitive minorities never existed.

Stereotypes exist because the majority of people of that particular culture act/look a certain way. Blacks don`t get offended when you say they`re all great athletes with giant penises.

just because some white people are ignorant, doesn`t mean they should be treated as racist. A lot of white people have never been around black people. But they are trying to do their best. What if it was chitterlings and greens. Still offensive? Get over yourselves, people.

I don`t understand why, my friend the trash man know what you eat and black people eat fried chicken, watermelon, and grape drink. And we live in Ohio.

Anyone ever wonder why the U.S. catches the most crap about slavery when we were one of the countries with the fewest?
Oh that`s right, it furthers a cause that some have that were never around to suffer through slavery nor is anyone alive that propagated it.
I feel sympathy for black people that went through it, but not for today`s black people. Please don`t tell me that a black person can`t get a fair deal in today`s society. That card is gone.

Corn beef and cabbage is common on saint pats day here but no one bitches mabey you should learn something about what being a whineball over stupid s**t gets you. Making a month for a specific skin color just perpetuates bulls**t.

ROFL!!! Ya the almost 100 years of conflict between Ireland and Britian/UK were just a minor misunderstanding. There`s also this sort of thing......

Do a search for "watermelon" on that page and see what you get.

"What color are Irish people again????"

OMG- Who was being crappy to the Irish? Non-Irish WHITE people. Do I have to draw a Venn diagram to split off the different white people who crapped on other people? White people crap on white Jewish people, too. Technically, middle eastern people are white so other white people crap on THOSE white people. But there`s a common thread here.

"Should we look at Africas current track record of black warloards crapping on black people or blacks enslaving blacks back in the day or would this make your head explode from lack of blame?"

What does that have to do with what happens in America and this post in particular? I`m talking about white people on IAB not getting that things like this are crappy to do to other people when they KNOW it will upset them. Trolling in real life for no reason other than to be a jerk.

"I used to work in a high school kitchen. On St. Patricks Day we used to serve corned beef and cabbage, on Cinco De Mayo we would serve Burritos or enchiladas with refried beans and rice. Why aren`t people bitching about that."

How many years did we enslave, torture and lynch Irish and Mexican people? How long did we make them use separate schools, separate seats on the bus, separate water fountains, prevent them from voting, lynch them for touching white women?

Besides, Irish and Mexicans have a certain food culture because it`s from a separate country. Black history month isn`t about black people in Africa, it`s about black people in America and they ate American food so there isn`t really a different food for them. Yes, there`s regional food but not "Black" food.

"It was the Black Student Union that decided on the menu"
No they didn`t, Watch the report again. They were asked after the outrage and asked that the watermelon be taken off, since it`s the most obvious insult. Watermelon isn`t exactly a fruit commonly known for being eaten in winter, now is it?

Psst, Gerry, there are a lot of black reporters now.

All the white people on here, whining when a mirror is held up to their a-holery. Deny, deny, deny.

If you pause and read the letter, all they cared about was the watermelon getting 86`d from the menu.

Also, why is it when there is a "black" story the news shows always have to scare up a black reporter? If they only report facts does the reporter`s race have an impact? Facts iz facts...izn`t they?

Fried chicken watermelon etc etc is a stereotype not racism. Racism is in the heart, not objects and things. Just like objects and things can`t be good or evil. Racism is in the heart and horribly damaging when used as a tool to hurt others just for the sake of hurting them. Stereotypes are just that... HARMLESS stereotypes that only become a problem when you try to make it one. "Whites cant dance" (and i can`t.. not a damn lick and i have ZERO rhythm to boot) isnt racist any more than saying blacks are better athletes because they`re black. they are! they`re physically superior in so many ways its not funny, but pointing that out is racist? newp.

If fried chicken and watermelon were the foods that slave owners forced their slaves to eat, THEN serving it should be a problem, otherwise pass me a leg and lighten up Francis.

lauriloo-[quote"> Why is it being made as a special lunch for black history month?[/quote">
Maybe because of large portion of blacks consider it `soul food`.

When you invite a Korean friend over, some people tend to want to serve them korean dishes (even though NON-Korean people eat it too). This is no different. Now, if they were celebrating Korean history and tried to serve stir-fried-cat, THAT would be offensive.

At least they didn`t serve Chit`lins.

You`ve already demonstrated your willfull ignorance on guns and the tea party, please try not to make an ass of yourself on this, too.

lauriloo-
You have to be pretending to not understand why putting those particular foods on a menu for black history month wouldn`t be upsetting
It`s only upsetting because some people WANT to be `upset`. We have an entire industry that exist for the sole purpose of being `offended`.

There`s nothing offensive about Chicken, Watermelon and cornbread. The fact that blacks tend to like it, as well as whites and latinos. That fact is not racist.

"Doesn`t have to be racist."

It is when it`s mean-spirited and a historically oppressive group of people doing it to the people they oppressed. It`s the intent. Canadians don`t care if Americans make fun of them because white Americans didn`t oppress them for centuries in the past. I`m willing to bet the person who chose that menu is one of those white "why do THEY get a special month" people. No other reason to do something so blatantly racist. An adult would have to be a total moron to not know the history of that food combo when associated with black history month.

Like people here have said, EVERYBODY likes chicken and watermelon. Why is it being made as a special lunch for black history month? BECAUSE of the mean-spirited stereotype. Why not ribs, collard greens, mac and cheese and grits if you want to go ethnic? Why didn`t they ask the black student`s union for menu input BEFORE they chose the menu?

"Question is what else would you serve?"

Anything besides fried chicken and watermelon when you know damn well the negative stereotype that food represents. Pretty simple. Black people eat the same food as white people, especially in freakin` California. I don`t know why this is so hard to understand. Boggles my mind that so many people are so clueless (or more likely pretend to be clueless when they do something racist and someone calls them on it.)

and if they were doing Italian month, they would serve pasta. Canadian month would have been beer, donuts, and spam. Every culture has stereotypical foods they enjoy. Doesn`t have to be racist.
"I don`t get it. Fried Chicken, Watermelon and Corn Bread isn`t a `black` thing. It`s a `southern` thing."
When blacks migrated north after the civil war they took the southern foods with them naturally. Yankees didn`t eat that stuff so it became associated with the black community. Soul Food is really just southern cooking.

You are old enough to know there is a LONG history of racists making cartoons of "big-lipped black people" eating those foods, chicken and watermelon in particular. Look at the picture I just posted as an example of people STILL doing it. Over and over again to try to make fools of black people. You have to be pretending to not understand why putting those particular foods on a menu for black history month wouldn`t be upsetting for people old enough to remember those days (and still seeing crap like that from the far right wing to insult Obama and try to delegitimize his presidency).

In Da South, Fried Chicken is a staple. As is Corn Bread. NO supper is complete without either Corn Bread or biscuits. And Watermelon is a summertime treat.

TheZigRat-
they sell Corn Bread only at this time of year
Sell? Cornbread?

Of course black people love fried chicken and ribs. You know why?... IT`S FREAKIN DELICIOUS! Everybody loves fried chicken and ribs! My lily white husband can`t get enough watermelon...is he reaching out to the black community? No it`s just darn tasty. So is cornbread.

Greens are less popular but I love me a mess of greens. It`s a southern thing, white or black.

Ask the racists:

America has a long history of a group of people blaming other people for their problems. BUT, Europe has their own (e.g., Nazis, skinheads).

IAB Feedback: Whatever link that was you posted, don`t do that. A lot of us at work have pooty computers and that took 4 times longer to load, and then would play 3-5 seconds - freeze 3-5 seconds - play 3-5 seconds.

Totally unwatchable on a company computer. I`ll have to wait till I get home..

Well, guess I`ll go give the company some of my time now.
