Andrew155 How about Hong Kong`s incarceration rate? 130 prisoners per 100,000 population. We`re nearly double Norway, but towards the other end of the spectrum in regards to having a large population of low income earners relative to the rich and high urban density. But guess who`s the world leader with a magnificent 716 prisoners per 100,000 population? that place must be filled with the world`s nastiest mofos, or else it simply have a criminal culture. It`s not North Korea... it`s worse still.

But what I do know about prisons is that they are usually at a state or local level and that states that ban privatization, like Illinois, do not really experience different results. People still commit crimes and a crapton of people go to jail.

The criticism is obvious though,

Punishment - that`s the point of prison, everywhere. Otherwise, why imprison people guilty of crimes of "passion"? They won`t do it again, probably. Why put any drunk driver away? Just take the license away. Well, jail is to punish. Europe does that more than we do for that crime, certainly.

Other developed countries have the advantage of not experiencing the conditions we have. If we bestowed Detroit onto the laps of Norwegians, they would not be able to manage it. They would freak out. They would have to choose to either have the second highest incarceration rate, or high crime.

Private prisons, I`m not a prison expert. I would have to do some research to find the best prison system, but I do know we`re not the only ones. The UK has private prisons.

@ Andrew: I`m not sure Draculya`s trolling. He makes some good points, however unwelcome they may be to American ears. I think it`s an embarrassment that this country has more citizens incarcerated than any other in history and that we have for-profit prisons.

Draculya`s trolling.

Compare Norway to Iowa, and suddenly you realize why Noway is Norway. Really, it doesn`t take a rocket scientist for this. It`s pretty obvious you`ll have less people in jail if 1% of your petty thefts get solved.

Seriously, every country the internet wants America to be like fits the exact same pattern. Small and/or sparsely populated super white country that is either historically Protestant or has a huge population of Northern European descent.

Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Norway, Iceland, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, The Netherlands.

Doesn`t anyone else notice this?

Justice means different things to different people. In Norway the focus is on rehabilitation (even in the case of life imprisonment).

In the USA, it`s a mixture of punishment, oppression of certain classes, and profit.

Norway`s system has been shown to work a lot better... unless your objectives are rooted in hate and greed. So much for a `Christian` society!

USA, land of the incarcerated. Your posts just prove me right.

I have to agree with S4S...

I`m usually not for the death penalty in practice because it can only really be morally and ethically justified in a utopic legal system that makes no distinction between individuals and makes no mistakes.

However I have to agree that there are cases like this one where the person has without a doubt committed an act that forever excludes him from society, with absolutely no chance for rehabilitation.

Honestly there is no point in keeping him alive, other than to respect the legal system of Norway.

@ McGovern: IKR? What`s the downside? Either you get away with it and become obscenely rich--or you get caught and live out the rest of your life like a college student.

Just let him starve himself. Keep offering him food, and if he dies, he dies.

@ FredSpudman: I`m not sure it`s as black-and-white as you think. It doesn`t need to be a case of "Every murderer gets capital punishment" or nothing.

How about, "Only those who are convicted of mass murder get capital punishment"?

@Squrlz I don`t think that people should be executed by a state... Except for him? That simply isn`t how capital punishment works. You`re either for it, or against it.

Take this guy`s balls; put them in a solid block of ice.

Remove the balls and place in an oven. Do not let the balls burn off completely.

Rinse, and repeat.

Now fortunately, Norway does have a low murder rate even though they have conditions like 1/3 of households owning a firearm. If we do compare Norway to America, it would be most proper to compare Norway to Iowa or New Hampshire, in which case they are not so different. Except Iowa has way fewer thefts.

Oslo is the theft capital of Scandinavia. Here, a Norwegian site is talking about a travel guide that warns that Oslo is not safe for female German tourists.

My brother married a Norwegian woman, we`re pretty close to that side of the family and I go there often. Norway is very nice, I would even live there, but their conditions are so unique to them that it has few implications for even nearby countries like Germany or the UK.

Their largest city is 600,000 people, there are cities in America some people have never heard of that size. But still, Oslo has a ton of "petty" crime way higher than other European countries, and supposedly less than 1% of them get solved. It`s actually really bad, and it`s getting worse.

Four times as much crime in Oslo as New York

Andrew155- it`s not Norwegian prisons which reduce the crime rates- it`s to do with adopting Norways societal attitude to offending and rehabilitation- it is that which leads to the prisons. He can ask for anything he likes I am sure- but just because he ask for it- doesn`t mean he will get it!!

A couple centuries ago, every October people would pack apples in sawdust or dry sand inside of barrels. Those barrels were kept in root cellars and if all went well, you`d have crisp apples all winter and into the spring. If, however, you overlooked an apple that had some rot started on it, well, the whole barrel would be found to contain nothing but rotten fruit when you opened it.

Thus the saying, "One bad apple spoils the whole barrel."

Anders Breivik has developed a cult following of individuals who believe that his slaughtering of 77 people, most of them teenagers, makes him a hero. He corresponds with those individuals by mail and that`s why he wants his weekly allowance of about $50 to be doubled to $100--for postage costs.

Generally, I`m against capital punishment. But this is one bad apple that should have been thrown in the trash.

He knows what he`s doing, he`s trying to exploit the Norwegian prison system because he knows it`s ridiculous.

People will actually have you believe that if you just adopt Norwegian prisons, you will get Norwegian crime rates.

The "you are killing me" quote appears in an article in The Telegraph, which is worth the read if your stomach can handle it.

He wants better contact wit the outside world? Does he not understand the concept of imprisonment? I`ve seen photos of his prison cell... it`s ritzier than the average college student`s living quarters. This guy should have been executed yet he`s complaining?
