The distance between Mars and Earth varies a lot. I don`t know what it is right now, but variation in the distance would explain variation in perceived size.

Absolutely, Rick S. I think I`ll revisit that book again tonight when I get into bed and switch on my kindle. Ideally I should be getting out my scope more than I have on these clear winter nights...but i`m feeling too lazy for going out setting it all up. One day I`ll get round to posting a few pics of my own taken rather amateurishly from my skywatcher 200p.

Nice post 5cats. I always enjoy your science/astronomy posts.

I wonder why they never looked before? It`s been 10 years they`ve been roaming around.

I found this to be in the "Epic Cool!" category & thought I`d share :-)

Holy heck, that is amazing. So now we know what the first humans on Mars will see when they look up in the sky at home. Great post.
