There are a lot of good points here. Overall, I think we`re better off here than we would be there.
Anyway, I can`t help but suspect there`s at least some control on what the journalists are allowed to report. Maybe even some pretty strict rules and pre-approvals on how the "Local Life" color pieces are presented.

@SleepyHallow: Wrong as usual. There are on-going investigations into the IRS`s abuses, it`s far from "proven false". Benghazi is still being investigated as well...

And such vile language, that`s the best retort you can come up with? You bring shame to your side...

What an idiot, Ollie. Still harping about things long ago proven false.

Why don`t you just ask for his birth certificate while shouting "Bengazhi" you stupid piece of schitt.

...unless you happen to be a conservative organization applying to the IRS for tax-exempt status (just like all the liberal organizations), but they jerk you around and harass and threaten you and make illegal demands for protected personal and private information and deny your application so you can`t raise any money till long after the election is over.

One of the things he`s saying here, and I think it makes sense, is about how easily we can be distracted from what`s most important. Look at Sochi: if all of the reports are on the failed fifth ring, toilets and lack of clean water, there`s not nearly so much talk about human rights violations there, corruption, megalomania, etc.

Same in the US. We fight each other, and angrily, over really inane stuff that we should each be allowed to decide for ourselves (religion and manner of stuff associated with it), and lose sight of the more important things.

Now please excuse me, I have to go get in an argument about gay marriage...

As for the subject of this, Putin probably did it on purpose. "Let`s give the a-hole journalists an adventure", he has a certain contempt for them.

Yes, we do AgentSmith. I hear people on the internet all the time say Democracy in the US and UK, as well as other countries, is a sham. Yes, I`m sure your life is that miserable. It`s just atrocious being here, I can`t do anything! (with the exception of pretty much everything). It`s just like Russia and China, except it`s not. Go read some books, both about history and current geopolitics involving Middle Eastern nations, Russia, and China. Certainly Africa and Latin America, too.

And then you`ll realize the flaws in Western systems are tolerable and that there is no need to scrap the system of scratch, just patch improvements where needed. Otherwise, you`ll get 1917 again.
