I can understand the officer`s initial fear; sitting in his car hearing a big thump on the windshield. Being put in a situation where your life is in danger, the officer could have possibly thought that the thump was gun fire, and believed that it was directed towards him. That is as far as I will agree.
Once the officer realized that it was a snowball, the officer should have just quelled the crowd and sent everyone on his/her separate way.

Gonna have to fault the parents on this one.

If by the age of 13, you haven`t taught your child enough about life in general to keep him from throwing snowballs at cops then you`re a fail parent.

If you are a cop and there is snow you can either be a dick and alienate everybody by busting kids for throwing snowballs or you can do this.

sorry... there are just some things that "kids being kids" shouldn`t excuse. My kids would NEVER in a buhzillion years have even jokingly thrown anything at any law-enforcement officer, ever, because I raised them to respect the "5-oh" that they`re not the enemy. (they also know their citizen`s rights in case of a `hot dog") but that aside, assault is assault... felony? no way... make the kid, and those responsible for his upbringing, shovel a crap-ton of snow and call it a day.

F*cking ridiculous; don`t know what`s worse: the cop over-reacting or the educator (Fields) saying that snowballs are the gateway step to gun violence in kids. Sweet f*cking Jesus, what the hell is wrong with Chicago?

This is a tad bit of an overreaction. I`m all for personal liberty no one got hurt, and I`m not sure I`ve heard anyone ever being killed by a snowball.

Can you imagine if the cop just threw a snowball back? Maybe they could have had some fun, and taught the kids that cops aren`t the enemy by showing them that cops are humans, too.

MelCervini `sorry... there are just some things that "kids being kids" shouldn`t excuse.`

Yes, but throwing snowballs isn`t one of them. Because kids+snow = snowballs.

broizfam, if the cop had thrown a snowball back, and the child fell over, the entire police department would be at fault, and the family would be suing the police department. Furthermore, the officer would lose his job, and it would be worse than what the officer did in the first place.

"If had gotten away with it, who`s to say what they`d do next? If it doesn`t stick to them now, they`ll be 16 or 17, and they`ll have a gun," Fields told DNAinfo.

Oh really? So, by that logic, everyone who has ever thrown a snowball at anyone should be a murderer by the time they`re 18. What a f**king idiot!

I`m tired of the police (and politicians) getting to play by a different set of rules and getting special treatment. Everyone else would just have to deal with the fact they got tagged by a snowball, thrown by a KID!

If I was the cop, I would have gotten out of my squad car and joined in on the snow ball fight. That one, simple, human gesture would have done far more to win people over to respecting the police than would arresting 1,000 people on BS charges. Seriously, they need to get over themselves; they are no more important than anyone else.

Unfortunatley LordJim, this is Chicago. These cops are rightfully in fear of their lives. The government barely even has sovereignty over parts of the city. I can understand them being easy going in other places - in both America and abroad, but a big city inner-city cop is going to have different experiences.

    Drunk from authority.

Many of the people who want to be cops, do so because they want the authority.
We need cops who aren`t in it for the power.

We need a complete overhaul of our police force.

Alot of IABers critize the 2nd amendment, and say things like "your rifle won`t stand up to tanks and missiles."

When revolution comes, it won`t be citizens fighting the military. It will be the boys in blue we`ll have to worry about. Our military men are in it for America and the citizens. The cops are in it for the power and authority.

Totally, just look what happened in Ukraine. It was the police snipers who were taking aim at their unarmed citizens. The top military guy was fired from his post because he refused for the military to go against their own people.

    maggierose78-Because kids+snow = snowballs.
But there are certain people kids should not throw snowballs at:
    Police Officers,
    Little Old ladies,
    Nuns,
    Anyone surrounded by Secret Service.

Or, better yet, anyone not actively 1) playing with you or 2) anyone you don`t know how they would react.

jamie76-you have NO rights in a police state
I didn`t realize assaulting an officer of the law was a `right` one enjoyed in any non-police state.

Those citizens weren`t unarmed; they were disarmed -- not the same. That`s one reason why I`ll never give up my guns.
