Is it just more religious cherry picking?

@SavageChef,
As a Jew, a man, and a doctor, I still don`t know why it`s become a religious tradition. And, in fact, it has become quite common even in the non-Jewish community.

@Angilion,
No. It`s not standard medical practice and, in fact, has nothing to do with the extremely small potential for damaging infection in the future. It`s done only if the parents want it. It`s also being tried in some African nations where HIV is rampant to see if removal of that blind pocket can help reduce the transmission rate. People who are really against it keep calling it "mutilation". Technically speaking, I suppose it is but it`s removal of a piece of skin that`s about 1 x 2 centimeters and about a millimeter thick. It takes about 5 minutes. It`s not much of a mutilation (unless there`s a screw-up during the procedure). The baby is, typically, happily sucking at Mom`s breast 10-15 minutes later. "Mutilation" is used simply to scare people who don`t know and in

Okay, and why did the Jewish guys dream up this? As in, why was there a problem with boy`s weiner skin? I don`t understand this, being neither a Jew, a man, or a doctor. Also, I only gave birth to girls, so this never came up.

broizfam:

Is it standard medical practice to cuts parts off of infants bodies because of a very small chance that those parts might possibly become infected decades later?

It isn`t, is it?

There`s a good reason why it isn`t, isn`t there?
I`ve heard several women state that they think an uncircumcised penis is "disgusting". Whenever I`ve asked why, the only answer I`ve ever gotten was, "It just is!". I still don`t get it.
It`s social conditioning. If a mutilation is common enough and enforced strongly enough by conditioning, a significant number of people will find a lack of that mutilation disgusting.

Of course, it wouldn`t stop them thinking that other mutilations from other cultures are disgusting. Humans aren`t noted for rationality or consistency.

@wibble4321,
I can`t help thinking how unlikely it is that Andrew155 actually asks girls whether they like his circumcised penis or not. Certainly he may, but I`m guessing not. I would guess, rather, that they`ve commented spontaneously. If that`s correct, I would think it indicates that they (She? He? Whomever!) actually DOES prefer a circumcised penis. I`ve heard several women state that they think an uncircumcised penis is "disgusting". Whenever I`ve asked why, the only answer I`ve ever gotten was, "It just is!". I still don`t get it.

I`m Jewish, but not a "believer". Here`s my only take on circumcision:
I work in a hospital. Every once in a while I see that there`s a guy on the surgery schedule, 30 or 40 years old, scheduled for a circumcision. Typically, this is because of persistent infections in the small blind pocket between the foreskin and the head of the penis which caused sufficient inflammation to stimulate an inappropriate healing cycle causing scarring that closed the urethra, leading to difficult voiding and increasing back pressure in the bladder, possibly even affecting the kidneys. It`s rare but, whenever I see it I`m thankful that I`m Jewish so that mine was done long before I could possibly remember the experience!

@Andrew155 "all the European girlfriends I`ve had preferred my mutilated penis." Because of course everyone will answer truthfully in such a survey. I bet you were probably the best/one of the the best they had ever slept with too? People say what people want to hear. Do you really expect someone to turn around and say "Actually your mutilated penis does sort of gross me out. You cannot really do anything about it but I really kinda wish you had a foreskin you know".

I am American and my Genitals have been mutilated. I really wish they had not cut me, I blamed my parents for a long time, but now I blame the broken US health care system. I`m not even a Jew, it makes me mad.

andrew155- as it happens I prefer men in one piece- but that is a choice MEN should make- not a choice made for you as a small child. Cutting bits off babies IS mutilation....unless it is medically indicated.

Genital mutilation of either sex is wrong, and unless medically necessary, is only carried out by primitive societies.

@Andrew155

I`m curious when you had yours done? As an adult or as an infant? I`ll admit, I find circumcised perhaps a little more appealing, but I wouldn`t choose my partner or require someone to alter themselves for that particular...erm, feature? ;)

I don`t disagree with any of the reasons for circumcision but I do agree with a lot of the reasons not to. My biggest thing is the matter of choice. I just think it should be up to the individual rather than the parents.

My circumcision is not religious-based. And madduck, all the European girlfriends I`ve had preferred my mutilated penis. So I`m fine with it, you don`t need to be offended on my behalf.

a lot of jews are not following traditional rituals, such as not eating pork products, etc. Why not expect circumcision to be questioned by some too. I say leave that thang alone....he will want that skin someday
