There`s an old joke in England that the US is so ashamed at having been late for the last two world wars, they`re going to make sure they`re right on time for the next one.

That means we can stop sending the yearly billions with a B of dollars in aid to the ones that don`t like us? Maybe keep it here and take care of our own? Maybe give it back to the taxpayers?

"You can`t argue with opinion polls."

If I didn`t know better, I would`ve thought you were new here at IAB. IABers can argue against ANYTHING...
Just add a dash of political stubbornness, a pinch of "already have my mind made up", a gallon of unemployment, and a barrel of mental illness...and you have the perfect recipe for a IAB comments section.

You can easily argue against opinion polls. Just because a majority has an opinion doesn`t make them right.

The period from 1945 until now is known as Pax Americana. It is comparable to Pax Romana and Pax Britannica. All of these periods are marked by their respective societies being the dominate society in the world - with the result being a sharp decrease in the amount of wars in the world.

Pax Britannica: 1815-1914. Once the British Empire receded in power, it could no longer contain Germany. Deadliest wars ever ensued.

It`s just a fact, the world has never had less wars than today for a reason. The last war in Europe was Serbia. Europe couldn`t even take care of that on its own. America snuffs it out from the air alone. Peace kept.

Wars between nation states have become virtually extinct since Pax Americana came into existence. There`s a reason, it`s not going to be like that forever. And you will miss it.

Of course, they`re right. If we would just let the Islamists take over the world, the War on Terror would be over.

But then, if we had just let the Soviets take over the world, the Cold War could have been avoided, too.

Then again, if we had just let the Nazis take over the world, WW II could have been avoided, as well.

Also, if we had just let the South keep their slaves, the Civil War could have been avoided.

I guess we really are the problem, aren`t we?

The US is a good place to live. Better at least than Mexico, which is a sh ithole because of the war on drugs, caused by demand from their northern neighbours. That`s not the issue here.

The issue is that just about the entire world considers the US to be the greatest threat to world peace, worse than even the so called (at least by the Americans) Axis Of Evil.

Even the US` staunchest allies (I won`t count Israel because they can`t be counted on for support) consider them dangerous and treacherous.

The point is global opinion is turning. The US needs to take heed and rethink foreign policy.

This proves "Better the devil you know, than the one you don`t". A positive percentage of 9% would seem to mean that people are largely satisfied with where they are or are more covetous of their immediate neighbors.

Firstly, Draculya, our "allies" are with us pretty much 90% of the way. They`re with us in the spying, Afghanistan, patrolling the high seas to ensure free commerce. The United States, UK, Australia, Canada….they actually all functionally have the same foreign policy, and they all act in heavy cooperation. Both in the open, but even far, far more behind the scenes.

But don`t ignore the fact that we ARE world peace. We are Pax Americana. Wars between nations states have all but disappeared since Nato came into existence. That`s not a coincidence. When countries like Serbia misbehave, we shape them up in one swift swoop. That has kept the peace.

Those days will be over when we recede. It`s just interesting that you think the most peaceful time in history isn`t peaceful because of our global domination, but we are the problem. We are the only reason there is any war at all in the most peaceful time in history. Ok.

@Andrew155 While I do think the USA get`s more abuse then it deserves, and the same people who complain about American Intervention are usually the first people to be calling the USA to intervene and bollocking them when they don`t e.g Syria. I do think you`re overstating your case.

I`d also question the poll 1000 people from each countryt, so 1000 people from a population of 20 milion and then 1000 from a population of 1.2 billion? Not exactly accurate. The sample demographics as well? Ukraine, if done in Eastern Ukraine(large numbers of Ethnic Russians) course you`ll get the "surprising result" in favour of Russia and not too friendly on the USA...The questions asked will affect the answer

Opinion polls are easy to manipulate and should never have too much weight given to them. I remember the 1/4 women raped in S.E Asia poll dreadful poll, inaccurate questions and inaccurate "representative samples"

So don`t trust polls, and give the US

`In aggregate terms 24 percent of those polled thought that the United States was the greatest threat to world peace today.`

So slightly less than a quarter regard the most powerful and heavily armed nation in the world as the greatest threat to world peace. The figures are highest in regions where the US has a long history of intervening for it`s own benefit. You would hardly expect Mexico to see, say, Pakistan as threatening their peace.

Whether America is or is not actually the greatest threat to peace (and it probably isnt) is not the issue...

...the fact that so many people THINK it is, that`s the issue.

It`s no use complaining that they shouldn`t hate you. The fact is that you have to deal with the fact that they do hate you.

And remember when the world got a really tragic reminder that it`s not a good idea to pay no attention to the people who hate you?

I think the probability that major environmental or economical crises threaten world peace rather than a country is much bigger.

But if it comes to such an emergency situation every country is going to try to preserve its own wealth and status. Assuming the USA is the mightiest force in this world, this would mean that in the end the United States will force their will and believes to other parts of the world. That this feels as a threat to countries which do not share the same interests is understandable to me.

Anyway you seem to like a lot the concept of Pax Americana, i`m pretty sure that during the Pax Romana era, people would have seen the Roman Empire as the biggest threat to world peace...

    Ah, the Pax Romana.

    `solitudinem faciunt, pacem appellant`

`They make a wilderness and call it peace.`

(Tacitus, reporting the words of Caledonian chieftan Calgacus.)

In my opinion pakistan is currently the greatest threat to world peace; a nuclear armed disfuncional state riddled with corruption, fanaticism and tribalism unable to control it`s own provinces and with a brief, belicose and bloody history. But the US would also have to be seen as a very significant contributing factor due to the FP of successive administrations including the present one.

Syria is obviously destabilizing a region that was never very stable at the best of times and NK is clearly deranged, but the US and its allies have at least decided to leave them pretty much alone. China is not a threat (except maybe to Japan) because trade is working too well for it to risk chaos. At least until the coming scramble for resources. Iran? I don`t think so.

Marco51 - thank you, Captain Obvious. That`s my entire point. The Romans would be seen as the biggest threat, even though they ushered in one of the greatest periods of peace and progress in the ancient world. And during 1815-1914, the British Empire would be seen as the biggest threat to peace in Europe, despite one of the most peaceful centuries on the continent ever. In reality, it was never the UK that was the biggest threat to peace, they were so powerful they were enforcing the peace. It was Prussia, and then Germany, that was the biggest threat. And that`s what ended up happening.

Bakcagain, I agree with you. Not all the interventions are necessary and good, but I think people would not like to see the world without the US (and its major allies) keeping rogue nations like Serbia in check. It`s more of a deterrence thing than anything.

When have we ever made a profit from invading a country? Iraq is selling their f***ing oil to f***ing CHINA!

Murders, rapists, muggers, and thieves also fear cops. Does that make the cops a threat to peace, too? By your standards, I guess it would.

    Way to argue the point.

I submit to you, the only reason Taiwan exists is because of the United States. Japan and China`s other neighbors would be pretty high on the knock-out list if our deterrence did not exist in the region.

Exactly. I seriously don`t understand why they don`t gather at the little white house on the hill, and run those greasy politicians out. They know they`re robbing them, but they don`t do anything about it. Like sometime in the last 100 years the `brave` left the country all together. Maybe they just moved to Canada.
