When a horse invents the wheel I will believe they are as smart as we are. Until then ..... nothing to talk about.

gerry, horses are stupid. if you let one out in a field of oats, it will eat until it dies or someone goes and brings it back into the barn.

dogs, on the other hand, can be trained to do all kinds of things. AND they`ve managed to train the human race. people raise and harvest grain for their food, then cook, package, and ship said food. then their human subjects feed them.

dogs are nearly as bad as cats in their subjugation of the human race.

Animals aren`t smarter than us, they just aren`t, they might be smarter than we give them credit for but still no where near as intelligent as humans.

Ridiculous. There is a HUGE difference between complexity and intelligence. Being able to "smell" really well does not indicate a higher way of thinking. Studies have looked at the brains of various animals and shown that there isn`t a whole lot going on up there. They lack the ability to "think" the way we do. They have some basic rationalization skills but we are talking about VERY minor abilities. The issue here is, once again, humans anthropomorphizing animals.

So this article claims because we as humans cannot sense the olfactory world the same way animals do, then we`re simply misunderstanding their intelligence?

Yet we have technology with which we can measure this olfactory world. Doesnt this beg the question why our technology hasnt opened the door to this world of intelligent smells we cannot see?

Oh right, because our technology already has and it`s nothing special.

The topic here shouldn`t be "Humans are not smarter than animals we just don`t understand them" it should be "Animals are not as oblivious to the world around them as they appear."

For those of you naysaying this- you are doing the same thing as others- judging that intelligence is only to be measured by human standards. They have only just worked out simple tests to see if certain animals can recognise themselves in the mirror- there is no reason to think animals are not just as clever as us- but by their own standards.

On an individual level I don`t think we are very intelligent. Where we have excelled is our collective intelligence and ability to share vasts amounts of data between generations and each other. You only have to be competent with knowledge collated by society in order to be considered intelligent by other humans.
