Heinlein wrote a story where Hitler didn`t come to power. Instead someone worse did come to power. Only in the US. American became a giant military zone run by something akin to the Taliban. "If This Goes On..." part of the `Rebellion 2100` collection of stories.

If he`d murdered a wounded enemy? He`d regret that the rest of his life.

If it wasn`t Hitler it would have been someone else, perhaps someone who`d win the war for the Nazis!!
Or the Communists would have won that critical election and Stalin`s equally Evil USSR would have invaded France...

Besides, it`s a real `long shot` that this even happened.

Gotta be honest, my BS meter is pegged at 10 with this story but at any rate entertaining the story for argument`s sake: this is stupider than staring at yesterday`s lottery numbers and writing a book on how your life would have changed if you had only picked them.

It`d cross my mind for sure, but there`s no telling if someone worse would`ve "happened" instead or people that Hitler would`ve ended up NOT killing would`ve turned out to be mass-murderers ... there`s no way to know what alternate timelines would be and just because one is horrible, doesn`t mean the others wouldn`t have been. Not to mention everything that`s happened in the last 70+ years that would be totally different.

What @LordJim said. Hindsight is irrelevant.

The score is low because the story is stupid. It`s a story meant to drive home guilt for an honorable guy who did the right thing.

What an interesting story. Score on this is only 2.3 at the time of this post. A damn shame. Thats why we only get news with beiber in it.

He acted honourably. The consequences don`t change that.

I could understand regret maybe but guilt? Was the guy supposed to feel like he should have been less honorable and shoot a wounded man?

Guilt comes from morons who write articles like this with the intent of driving that guilt home.

And just how many `what if` scenarios have played out throughout history anyways?

Quite frankly, something was going to happen without Hitler, just one man.

Secondly, Hitler probably saved Western Europe from Soviet Socialism. We actually "lucked out", these two evil and powerful ideologies essentially cancelled each other out via the war.

Let us not forget that Stalin attacked every single country on his Western border (he actually invaded Poland WITH Hitler), as well as Iran on their Southern border and Japan on their Eastern border. And then he also killed more people, but Ukrainians and Kazakhs just aren`t as interesting as Jews, I suppose.

@Skythe- No, I wouldn`t blame the guy for a minute.

@Slut_etta- No wonder he ended up with such a complex.

i read recently that dogs were used to convey messages across the battlefield in WWI. when a dog wasn`t available, the lowest ranking and/or most worthless member of the company was sent. hitler was often sent in lieu of a (more valuable) dog.

I really do loath tabloids and the tone of voice they use.

Wow, I can`t even imagine the guilt he must feel, undeserved though it may be.

You can`t fault somebody for something impossible to know at the time.
