Psychologists named an actual psychosis for children growing up under the threat of "the bomb". We knew, not "thought", NEW - that there would be a nuclear holocaust. The questions was did you want to survive to see it? Or die easy and quick?

Laugh now that it`s all over but at the time this was a real threat that affected the health of children growing up not knowing if they would grow up.

Hearing a baby chuckling at 3am is pretty scary, especially when you don`t even have children.

The roar of a lion is pretty scary too, and the sound of a Stuka diving.

The scariest sound today is the silence of the Mass spying on us all as we speak.

where I live, we hear those same sirens on the first Wednesday of every month at 11am. And whenever there`s a tornado warning. no biggie.

We had an air-raid siren at the end of our estate when I was a kid. It was tested once a month and was bloody loud. I think it was a hangover from the fifties or one of the assorted world crises of the age.

@ Fwoggie - we want to warn people, not make them suicidal.

Maybe they should upgrade the tornado siren to the 21st century and use this sound instead.

@Fwoggie2 Yes they do use that, at least in the town I grew up in. Use to live in central Illinois. We had one tornado come through our town when I was a young boy, didn`t do much damage. A couple of house damaged enough to have to tear down. That sound I heard once a week on Tuesday mornings.

Younger IABers won`t get this. The impending nuclear holocaust is just scifi to them. But to us older ones it was very real, very scary, and it damn near happened a couple of times.

Why is this scary for someone 18-29 that lives in the Eastern US?

When you heard that you knew it was time to drop your pants and kiss your bum goodbye

We use that for when the Rhine floods and the volunteer fire brigade need to come out and build the temporary flood defence barriers. It also goes off as a test at 9am one Saturday a month and it`s a pain in the arse when I`m trying to have a lie in.

That said, don`t they use that for tornado sirens in Tornado Alley?
