    That`s not football. It`s SOCCER!!!

And before any British folks get upset, I would like to point out that it was the Brits who originally coined the term "soccer". And you can`t coin a term and then hate people for using it.

no i dont think any sport should be banned, i think the games should be played with no one watching except for on their tellies at home. as a matter of fact, i think it should be illegal for any two different groups of fans to occupy a pub at the same time.

No- pains me to say it as I loathe football. I was working in Central London in the early 80`s and there was some truly nasty violence going on then- but it was dealt with... not completely but it is much better. Millwall fans kicking their way through your train carriage was terrifying

Soccer, should be outlawed. It`s more and more about the fights and less about the game and focuses more and more on overpayed soccerplayers and a megalomaniacal FIFA.

People who riot over sports events are the dumbest on the planet. I say just shoot into the crowd and we won`t have to bother with them again.

    That includes Raiders fans.

    That`s not football. It`s SOCCER!!!

Which is a mangling of "Association Football", which is football played according to the rules of the Football Association.

    Your argument is rubbish.

If you want to be consistent, you would have to say that USA football is not football - it`s HANDEGG!

They`re all football, just different forms of it. The most widely played and most popular form of football (which you bizarrely claim isn`t football) could make the best claim to be the default football both on that basis and on the fact that it`s primarily played by hitting a ball with a foot.

Anyone ever tried to announce over load speakers "Attention stupid asses this is a game just a game!"

But it`s not really anything to do with the game.

The violence is tribal. The game is just an irrelevant way of defining the tribes. It could just as easily be haircuts or clothing or abstract symbols or anything else. It`s about people who want to define a group called "us" and attack anyone who isn`t "us" but especially to attack "them", where "them" is whatever other tribe "us" has a blood feud with.

It would be nice to think this attitude disappeared with modern civilisation, but it just rebranded.

Football has been outlawed in some parts of Britain in the past because it was used as a grouping for violence. That goes back to medieval times (and maybe earlier - we only have extensive records back to about 1100).

Football and all it comes with should be banned (brawlings, beatings, assaults, disfigurement and dismemberment). But Soccer and all it comes with (yawning, napping, blithe obliviousness and pleasant conversation) should not.

I believe the trouble is over the amount of money being spent to host next years world cup in Brazil whilst many Brazilians are living in poor conditions. Trouble is, Fifa, footballs governing body, like the Olympic committee, can make local businessmen and politicians very wealthy for hosting these events.

@QueenZira This isn`t at an American football game, this is a soccer (football for the majority of the world) match in Brazil. The rioting and deaths that happen at some soccer matches dwarf whatever drunken degenerate debauchery that happens in your silly little... what`s it called? The American version of the NHL, but with "football".

Outlawing football? Really? Thats probably one of the most stupidest knee jerk comment I have ever heard. There are literally thousands of professional football matches that are played round the world every week with no crowd trouble. And even when there is fighting, in a crowd of 60-70,000 people, its usually 10-20 people fighting.

    Wind your necks in.

Like everything else in life now, greed overrides anything and anybody.

    You can forget "now".

Take a look at chariot racing in ancient Rome, for example. It involved more money and more violence than any sport today. Rome itself had a stadium that could seat 250,000 people, charioteers who became multibillionaires and mass rioting, fighting and even killing amongst the "fans".

Firstly- many countries take football very seriously.. and yes- football- not American football- so called because it is played in ONE country. Rugby football is my choice- more violent on the pitch but fine off- but football violence CAN be dealt with- we have calmed it down over here- and Britain produced some world class footie hooligans. However- the game is loved by millions, kids who play in fields and in the streets to men who invest millions- so of course it produces strong reactions in people. Just not Americans because they don`t play the damn game.. only the rest of the world who apparently don`t count.

No need to outlaw the sport, just outlaw opening the stadiums to the public.....Problem solved.

If everyone has to watch the game on TV, no one is going to start a riot in their own living room.

Might be a good time to let you Americans know you made it to next years world cup finals. So called because it involves teams from all around the world. Unlike the superbowl winners who get called world champions and there`s only you in it.

Kicking a man when he`s down is the most despicable act during any fight. If you want to kill him, kill him. But punching a helpless victim is what cowards do. Manhood involves some honor.

Specators who fight because of football are mostly idiots who don`t actually know how the game ended. They are there to fight. It`s an ugly side and i wouldn`t mind football being banned for five years. Those fighters would be so hated that maybe the phenomenon would stop.

And there is no such thing as soccer. There`s football and american football. We compromise calling it american football despite it doesn`t use feet to play nor a ball. One is national sport, other is global.

    CrakrJak,

You have a point about the fans being mental. But no, soccer is the most beautiful game. The US has fielded some quite decent teams in the past and sometimes seems to almost get it, but it`s never quite made it.

I`m not havig a go but I suspect that is because an emergent national team can have a good run but not trouble the more established teams and American audiences want to see American victories to cheer. Today, not in later years. `What, we didn`t win? This sucks. USA always wins.`

It takes years of developing the sport before you can expect that, so `Soccer sucks` is easier than admitting that many, many countries are better at it than you are. Even quite small countries.

It is odd that while America excells in individual sports at an international level it just doesn`t engage in the international team sports the rest of us play.

    Overpaid sports stars, true.

The Olympics? Seriously? I thought we put on rather a good show. The US ranked, per capita, at 49th. GB at 23rd. But how many US golds were at team sports?

Women`s soccer, women`s beach volleyball, women`s basketball, men`s basketball. I think the rest were all individual events.

    So my point stands.

While looking at the numbers it it true that one or two exceptional athletes can, on a per capita basis, boost a country such as Grenada or Montenegro up to the top of the charsts, which distorts the figures.

But if we look at countries with a sizable population (say, above 10 million) and which have the sort of economy which supports sports the US ranked well behnd; Australia, Cuba, Netherlands, GB, Czech Republc, Khazakstan, Germany, France, Canada, Italy, Romania, Ukraine and Spain.
`How`d that whole Olympic thing work out for us last time? Oh ya...`

On the whole, rather well. I think we put on a damn good show and our Olympians did us proud. The Us took the highest number of medals and if if that gives you bragging rights then good for you.

    Gerry,

It`s mostly fine. This particular riot is about politics and the economy. Yes, I do tend to stay out of the city on match days, but in most places rabid violence only erupts three ot four times a year.

Where it is bad the teams are mostly a political, religious or ethnic proxy. It`s particularly bad in Italy, Spain, Greece and Easten Europe. Also Scotland. And the Near East. And some other places. So, yeah, actually quite a bit, come to think of it.

But it`s not as bad as it wss, in the UK.

America is supposedly the screwed up middle child of the world and yet soccer/"football" just doesn`t catch on here ... and I can`t imagine the kind of violence that goes hand and hand with it being even remotely tolerated. In other countries ... is part OF the game. (Geez, in America we just drink flat beer, eat cold hot dogs and yell at the ump/ref.

Soccer hooligans are literally the worst.
They shouldn`t have to stop people from joining together to enjoy a sport, plenty of other sports hold just as large of crowds without any violent incidents. It`s something about what this sport means to people that makes them riot, something about soccer that is so near and dear to them that they feel the need to do these things.
