Paper Says: Solar Activity Affects Earth`s Climate

Variations in the Sun seem to match Earth"s climate history. Science!

At least it`s a real science article, I`ll give you that, even though it`s not exactly new, it`s enough. But you`re reaching with your conclusions about the paper and what the author is saying. The author himself said he`s only analyzed 200,000 years and would need corroborations after looking into at least a million years to prove his model. So while this may suggest a possibility of a 100 ka solar cycle, this paper alone does not show that it actually exists. This also doesn`t really explain the rapid warming more recently seen, as his model is for predicting relatively moderate changes over a very long time frame. There are also sources of error from core samples.

So while it is interesting, it is not exactly shown to be correct, and even if it is it doesn`t somehow invalidate climate change. He`s not saying the Sun is the reason for all the warming we`ve seen, nor is he saying that we have no substantial impact on climate ourselves.

Thanks again 5cats and Ollie! What is the opinion of the overwhelming amount of climate scientists and those in the field with PHDs compared to right wing pundits and educated people such as yourself? Nothing that`s what! Everyone with a brain can see that there is a global conspiracy going with these scientists, that and these people with years of study in the field are far too stupid to take into account details like what you guys constantly post! Keep fighting the good fight!

It tis true, the sun seems to be on a 10,000 cycle including a `snapping of the magnetic arcs that get twisted up over time from its rotation.

@TJEx: They`re not trapped in "summer ice", eh?

They`re trapped in "bitter irony" ;-)

The SS Ice block aka MV Akademik Shokalskiy will be stuck in the Antarctic summer ice that is not to be there as it summer until they run out of supplies and have to be air lifted off the ship.

"...was the result of a cyclical pattern..."
It`s not just one pattern. There are local, mid, and large patterns overlaid but, they are cyclical and the overall is trending downward for the last 150M years.

The actual danger lay in
-polluting local environments into health hazards (check out the smog in Beijing)
-resource exhaustion
resultant of overuse of industrial tech.
We can`t do without industry but, we do have to improve/replace industry with tech that reduces and shifts the points of impact.

Watching a provably incorrect target hampers the effort to convince industry to improve itself.

Why do people still believe the global warming nonsense? Never believed it. I believed the "other " scientists that drilled the ice cores and said global warming was the result of a cyclical pattern, not the money-grubbing scheme scientists and politicians.

This is rubbish! Is it April fools day already?
Even a fool knows that if you removed the sun, the earth`s climate would remain exactly the same.
Tch!

How is this even possible. "All" intelligent people "know" it is humans that control 100% of the world`s climate. If we do not don sack cloth and wear ashes, the world will end!

The indisputable fact is, the global warming alarmist have been proven wrong.

So, why is anyone still listening to them?

@DrShrinker: A) I do not physically put the post up, I merely suggest it. If it wasn`t working for you and I try to help? Don`t get all snarky, dude.

B) "much" - It has gone up on average, yes, after the effects of the `solar spike` wore off.
But FAR less that AGW predicted.
In fact there was a short and very weak `solar maximum` peaking about 5 years ago (iirc) and temps have fallen since then. Dispite CO2 rising I point out.

So: After that one big spike in solar activity in 1996 (iirc) caused the rise in temps found on Mann`s `hockey stick` and sparked AGW hysteria? The temps have continued to follow SOLAR patterns and NOT CO2 levels. Going DOWN after the spike, rising with the maximum and falling again.
Exactly as this theory predicts. The opposite of AGW theory.

What`s your point? Global temps are nearly identical to 2000`s. Not hockey sticked!

@Andrew155

Dr Shrinker, his 2nd point was that temperatures didn`t rise in the past 15 years. And they haven`t risen in that time, even though a good portion of all CO2 ever emitted has been emitted within the past 15 years alone.

Did you even read the link that you posted?

"The rate of warming of over the past 15 years has been lower than that of the preceding 20 years. There is no serious doubt that our planet continues to heat"

That completely contradicts your statement.

Are there models accurate? Heck no. But there is a consensus that man has contributed to the warming, how much is surely up for debate.

Dr Shrinker, his 2nd point was that temperatures didn`t rise in the past 15 years. And they haven`t risen in that time, even though a good portion of all CO2 ever emitted has been emitted within the past 15 years alone.

This is why the Economist has hedged. They are now coming up with a new theory about "carbon sensitivity" and it being different than previously though, because all of the models have failed.

I`m almost tempted to vote on these posts for the simple fact that 5cats works himself into a frenzy.

Any fool can support their claim with a Google search.

Look! I can be a google genius too!

But...it isn`t fair to pick on the ill.

@5Cats,

Your original post did not link to the correct place, but just a duplicate of the image, so don`t get all snarky about your failure to post accurately.

So with point 2, you agree that temperatures have risen in the past 15 years. And with point 3, you acknowledge a decline in solar activity in that time. Then how do you explain any rise in temperature in this time? Shouldn`t the temperatures have gone down by your theory?

Direct link here
There`s several pages of excerpts @DrShrinker.
Both you and PirateFish need to `right-click` on the image and `open in new tab` eh? :-)

@DrShrinker:
#1 The Earth has been warming steadily since the "little ice age" without human influence.
#2 It has not warmed much at all in the past 15 years, despite CO2 rising.
#3 Solar activity has mostly declined in that time.

You connect the dots, sport...

Duh! Yes, solar activity influences our temperature, but since we`ve had satellites measuring solar output since 1978, it has been found that solar output alone does not explain the rise in global temperature.

Everyone knows the climate is in fact impacted by quantum physics.

Simply observing the climate causes the climate to change.

To stop climate change we must stop observing the climate.

I`m resisting making fun of the AGW fans... but it ain`t easy!

The Sun affecting the Earth`s climate? NAW! Cannot be! lolz.

We`re probably heading into a "triple minimum" AND solar pole switch. Could be colder for another decade or two...
