@keith, that`s the main issue.

20 years ago, minimum wage was a living wage. You started at the bottom with that and worked your way up to a higher paying position over time and with effort (think factory work, manual labor, fast food type things.)

Over time, a decent living wage has grown far beyond the confines of minimum wage. You know how people are always saying that having a bachelors now is like having a high school diploma 20 years ago? It`s actually true in respect to how common they are, as well as the wages received when you adjust for inflation. It`s not just fast food workers that deserve to get more money, it`s honestly nearly everyone.

There is no logical reason that a CEO should make over 2 million a year with an additional several million as a bonus because "they worked really hard".

Call me a communist, but spread the love. There is no reason that a ceo should work for a million times the rate of an entry level worker, whi

My job requires a damn college degree and make roughly what those fast food workers are asking for as far as hourly wage. They need to freakin get real. If they start making what I make, I will definitely be very upset.. and applying to McDonalds for a nice stress-free burger flipping gig raking in the big bucks.

Unfortunately, the only way government can act is by the execution of power, which is nothing more that the ability to hurt people. For every action that government takes, regardless of the people that may benefit from it, someone gets hurt - be it financially, physically, or intellectually.

With this in mind, we should be extremely careful when allowing government to act, because someone will be made to pay a price for it. Unfortunately, you, me, and people like us, rarely have the ability to persuade government to hurt someone else; on the other hand, corporations do. I think you will find that most oftentimes, we pay the price of government actions, not rich CEO`s or corporations.

Why should we continue to open doors for them?

I`m not suggesting that we do any such thing. I`m merely pointing out that *someone* must pay for the increased labor wages and that, most likely, it`ll end up being the people you`re trying to help.

Can you think of any way to force the business owners - the people who control the prices and employment opportunities - to foot the increased cost? We would need to enact a government that strictly controls prices, wages, additional compensation, and employment opportunities. Essentially, we would need the government to completely take control of business.

Does this seem wise to you? History suggests not.

Sure... I`d actually fault the Fed and WWI for kicking it off but the specific trigger point doesn`t really matter anymore. The point is that we are stuck in a situation where redistribution causes low wages and low wages cause redistribution.

And yes I agree someone will foot the bill but instead of just shrugging our shoulders and refusing to take action because its difficult to resolve we should in actual fact be doubling our efforts to make things more equitable.
Governments should be encouraging corporations to take action instead of corporations paying to get their representatives into the political establishment and blocking any efforts to make corporations socially responsible.

HumanAction I agree they are circular but dont agree that benefits are responsible for low wages I think the opposite is true low wages existed before benefits did, benefits are a result of corporations refusing to pay decent wages.

I think you will agree that the increased wages must be paid for by someone, right? The money must come from somewhere. So, who then can potentially pay for it?

1. Employers (higher labor costs)
2. Taxes (corporate subsidies, etc.)
3. Consumers (higher prices)
4. Employees (fewer hours, loss of employment, decreases to other compensation, etc.)

Considering this, which group do you believe to be most likely and least likely to pay for the increased labor costs?

Have you considered that the two - low wages and high entitlement spending - may be circular in cause?

For example, let`s imagine that there were no minimum wage and that I were offering you a job for $0.25 an hour. Even if it was the only job you could find, would you take it? Of course not. This point alone establishes the fact that an effective minimum wage exists sans a legal minimum wage. Why? Because you cannot live on $0.25/hour and neither can anyone else (in the US).

Now, if the government decides to subsidize your low wage with welfare or assistance - provided you have a job - then suddenly you`re willing to work for $0.25/hr. Why? Because that wage doesn`t matter - the assistance will make up the rest.

Perhaps we should begin to consider how entitlement spending enables low wages.

I agree. I know entirely too many idiots and asswipes that have both, but can`t hold a job because they are idiots and/or asswipes.

Most of you seem to have a pretty decent, and intelligent point to make in this discussion. The one thing I don`t hear anyone saying though is what seems to me to be the most obvious point. ..having work experience, or a college degree doesn`t Guarantee you a good paying job. Hell, it doesn`t guarantee you anything. Furthermore, when it comes to either being homeless or being able to scrape by Every Single College Graduate will take a crappy McD`s job in a heart beat. What jobs are most prevalent in our society? Crappy ones for gigantic corporations that have 6 or more locations in each town or city. The argument that `all you have to do is be Worth more to get a better paying job` is completely ludicrous. I`ve known many college graduates that work at freakin` Starbucks, or McDonalds because That`s All That Is Available. That being said, should we still turn a blind eye on Everyone that works a craptacular minimum wage job and assume they are lazy or uneducated? Absolutely Not.

Backagain you might want to check your figures apparantly Walmart made a profit of $15.7 Billion in 2012 so they would if your other figures are not incorrect lose 1/3rd of their profits but would have increased the amount of money in shoppers pockets.

MeGrendel, theres nothing foolish about my point just because you dont agree with it doesnt make it wrong, its a perfectly valid point, I pay taxes my taxes pay benefits most benefits in the UK go to people in employment, effectively subsidising LOW wages.

While machines aren`t convenient to us just yet, we will grow used to them. We got used to self-checkout, didn`t we? Those aren`t convenient either.

Unless, as a culture, we reject automated ordering at fast food joints; they will come.

ATMs instead of bank tellers. Self-Checkout at grocery stores. Some sit down and eat restaurants have the tablet ordering system in place and they`re doing well.

Here`s what will happen if you raise minimum wage to $15.
Many will lose their jobs due to automation and reduction of work-force. The first to go will be the crappy workers.
Many CURRENT MinWage workers will be displaced by more capable/ harder working people who are currently working harder jobs for $14.50 an hour and would gladly take an easy job making $15 an hour.

Net result: Most current workers at McD`s will be unemployed and will not unde

Illusion that I always here in these debates. Companies might make slightly less profit. Wrong, you increase a wage say by $2 an hour. they work 8 hours a day that`s an extra $16. They work 6 days a week $96, They work 50 weeks a year, $4800 an employee, they have 1,200,000 employees (Walmart) that`s $5,760,000,000 from profits of $13,000,000,000. That`s half the profits. That money won`t be going into reinvestment overseas expansion new technology or anything. A company not sit and let it go, prices will rise.

So if you want to raise minimum wage fair enough have the discussion. But do not just say companies will make slightly less profit and have a proper discussion about the inflationary effects it will have. As a slight increase multiplies massively over a year and across an organisation, as you go up.

Your problem isn`t so much that your minimum wage is so low, but that your cost of living is so high.

Minimum wage in the US is the equivalent of junior- to mid-level manager pay grade in Hong Kong/ Singapore and Executive pay in China/ Malaysia/ Indonesia.

The differences are mostly down to taxes, insurance costs, and the minimum wage itself.

most of these poorly paid workers take subsidies from your and my government, in effect our tax dollars or pounds go straight into the pockets of these corporations, whereas if they were paid a living wage the corporations may take a slightly smaller profit and it would only be a slightly smaller profit but the subsidies could be removed and we could all pay a little less tax putting more money in our own pockets, but hey if you want to keep lining the pockets of already wealthy corporations keep on denying people a living wage.

I dont know one person thats sat with their partner broke out a calculator and figured out wether or not they can `afford` to have a child.
And my hypothetical person is just as valid as yours ;).
Gerry I worked at McD`s as a teenager and there was an eclectic mix from teenage students like myself 20 something dossers, middle aged trainee managers and older recently unemployed, there is no `average` McDonalds worker.

Some places like Wawa already do it.

It`s going to happen, and controlling the price of labor will only expedite the process.

Besides, it`s already been happening for the longest time now. Most of the cashiers in my supermarket are gone. And much of the burger making process is *already* automated. Fast food jobs have already been taken by machines, even with low labor costs.

Just because you think mandating a 15 dollar wage will work out for everyone doesn`t mean it will.

I`ve been to a few McDonalds with ordering kiosks, mostly in Europe. Never saw anyone actually using them though. I think it was La Guardia where I went to a food court and they had a system where you order off an iPad, it spits out the bill, you walk over to the central cashier, pay and walk back to the food place to pick up your food. Not that convenient and I had to help an older guy use the iPad just to order some fries and a Coke. I don`t see people being replaced by machines at food places any time soon.

And most importantly - you CANNOT force them to pay for the minimum wage out of their "greedy rich man" money bags. For some reason, you guys think the extra wages will come directly from the fat cats` money stashes, the mountains of money. No. Stop it.

If we assume they are greedy, they will not lower their, say, 5% profit margin to anything below 5%. So that`s all there is to it.

McDuff, that`s called a strawman. You create a hypothetical person in a well-paid position. However, my hypothetical person is only capable of minimum wage labor. If you can only produce that, you shouldn`t be surprised when it`s difficult to take care of multiple children.

Besides, you`re not going to be able to legislate anyone into prosperity with labor price controls. Labor price controls will not suddenly make this lady with 3 kids have enough money to take care of her children. The major labor price controls you guys are calling for (you guys want $15) will destroy people who can only make minimum wage currently. The arguments have already been put forward 1000 times:

1. Machines. You order on a computer. Machine builds burger.
2. Remaining employees will be made to work harder to justify doubling of wage.
3. Increased prices everywhere, nixing much of the wage gain anyways.
4. Nobody will pay teen down the street $15, ever.

I agree with you that wage isnt all about skill, but the working conditions at McDonalds are no worse than in any of the service industries.Its not a sweat shop,and no ones putting themselves in danger working there. Yeah, when working in any high volume sales situation you deal with non-nice individual customers and long hours, but that doesnt warrant the $15/hr that theyre asking. I grew up in a broke household,bills going to collection, eviction, the whole nine, so I understand the idea of not making enough money to survive. However, I`ve also accepted that in life nothing is free, and you make what you EARN. I agree that they arent making enough even working full time to survive, but if you have zero working experience, and you`re getting payed $15/hr while I`m making that much after busting my ass for years to better my life, you bet your ass I think thats unfair.Either raise it for everyone, or lower the cost of living.You make what you deserve,not what you want.

thats the problem, people are scared that people working at mcdonalds are making more than them. wage isnt always just about skill, sometimes it has to do with working conditions..besides mcdonalds is a fortune 500 company, it should be expected that thier employees make good money

Easier said than done, but quite frankly it would be pretty sad if someone flipping burgers god paid the same amount as a college graduate.
