"the stuff they teach you in school, teaches you to be a factory worker" = terrible advice.

"the best you can be, is probably average" = even worse advice.

these two alone more than cancels out everything else with an inkling of good advice that he said.

Some of it was good, like "be polite".
Some not so much. I would not be able to endorse this man as a guidance councilor.

He was lucky enough to have had good parent(s). I hope he keeps his kids away from the arsehole - types long enough for them to become good adults and continue the trend.

@paperduck- Apart from reading/writing there is very little else you use in the real world. I`m in my 50s and I can honestly say I have never used algebra or logarithms. It`s only thanks to I-A-B that I need to understand a pie chart now.

Drawman I do use some advanced math at work and certainly algebra is answer basic curiosities (like how sooner will my mortgage end if I throw an extra $100/mth at it) but the bigger problem with that advice is it is defeatist. The objective of school isn`t 100% the subject matter itself but familiarizing yourself with the process of learning, which is not a comfortable feeling. When a student becomes undaunted by that phase of confusion followed by kinda sorta getting it then finally understanding they are equipped with the most valuable skill to have: taking on challenges and navigating the learning process so we tackle new things on our own. Schooling familiarizes us with our own idiosyncrasies in that process by going through it hundreds of times. That is what schooling is about, what this guy said basically misses the whole point.
