    I think they`re required to hold hearings before cutting all funding off. Which is probably what they`re going to do.

    It was nothing but a meeting about the funding of SETI.

    Sorry @drawman, you`ll have to wait a lot longer to find those pesky reptilians that rule the world.

    So we got jtrebowski being deranged right now because they are having a (GASP) hearing on what to do about SETI funding, and lauriloo thinking this has something to do with immigration.

    LOL.

    It`s a fair question to ask if ETIs might pose a threat, or what chance they have of showing up.

    I think the answer is: we just don`t know and tiny.
    And if they are a threat? There`s not much we could do about it anyhow...

    Anyone else reading Letter 44 Comicbook? Link is to a review.

    Any race capable of traversing the galaxy already has every resources available to them that they could ever want or need.

    Our pissant little backwater world would be meaningless to them.

    The true threat from an alien species would be that they were so far advanced that they wouldn`t even recognize us as an intelligent species.

    We would be nothing more than ants at a picnic to them.
    Think about it, when was the last time you stopped and tried to have a conversation with a herd of cattle?

    @djwajda- poor thing, you should have gotten a grown up to tell you what SETI stands for before you posted.

    Not a herd but you talk to animals when you feed them, at least I do. I even make songs about what kind of food they`ll end up being.

    Men who are not hungry go hunting and fishing for sport.

    "We would be nothing more than ants at a picnic to them."

    Some people are known to take magnifying glasses to ants.

    They might not come for the rock we`re standing on. They might come for us.

    @5Cats- Shhh, quiet- next thing you know, our crazyass Congress will declare a war on ETI`s and spend billions to ship troops to Alpha Centauri looking for xenophobe extremists, while having TSA here checking passengers to see if they`re sporting belly buttons.

    @drawman61

    Poor thimg...you should do your homework to realize that SETI is a SEARCH, not contact, not UFO`s buzzing the earth`s surface but a SEARCH for life that may or may not exist in the Universe.

    You know, a theory that hasn`t been conclusively proven outside of smaller particles in our solar system? A theory that yes needs to have an answer hence debate over the budget of a government program.

    @Musuko42: Good points! ETIs might come for things we consider mundane, or just as tourists/sight seers.
    They`re just as likely to consider us "food" or "herd animals" as equals. Send us off to work in factories and mines on other planets.

    Just as saffron and truffles are expensive & rare? They might come for exotic foods! It would have to be something really yummy (to them!) to come all that way to get it.

    Just like "whalers" used to circle the Earth in sailing ships... spices, teas, fish...

    @5Cats

    Exactly. We may have no idea what they might or might not want from us here.

    An idea I`ve seen a lot in scifi is that a highly-advanced society, able to satisfy all their material needs, will search the stars for novel ideas and stories.

    It`s an interesting thought. After all, what would you do if you never had to work and had everything you needed?

    ...apart from debate on IAB, I mean.
