Foolishness? Why do you say that? Are you a flat-Earther?

So sea level is now a different "height" at different places? Ooooo-KAY!

I`ve always thought it was an "abstract" representation anyhow, why change it? Are we going to change all the "above sea level" data in the world now?

I`m not saying no, the notion is well presented: Earth isn`t round, sea isn`t flat (equally spread on the round surface I mean!), that`s what the old "abstract sea level" is based on. Perhaps it`s due for a modernization?

5cats -- the reason sea level is being refined and modernized is explained in the video -- GPS systems use the new sea level figures so you won`t be determined to be below sea level when you`re lying on the beach in Cancun. So there are important practical reasons that all these abstract calculations take place.

OK, so the sea level is dependant on local gravitational effects, and the WGS84 algorithm fixes it for GPS. I get that bit.
Now, what happens if there is an earthquake like at Banda Aceh or the recent Japan event? The land height is then different, the GPS will have to change will it?

GPS data is constantly updated based on significant geological activity, yes.

@BoredFrank: I`m not opposed to changing it, I said that! It will alter how we look at things though, we have to keep that in mind, eh?

Is the "Dead Sea" no longer "below sea level" anymore? ;-) I know: the sea level there is LOWER than anywhere else... takes some mental gymnastics.

"Sea Level" used to be a uniform measure, now it`s a VARIABLE. That makes sense?
