Link: Thor`s Flight - Stan`s Rants - Stan revisits a topic that continues to trouble him, namely, how the heck Superman flies.

So, Stan, if the hammer is light enough for him to swing around, how does it have enough mass to pull him along or, for that matter, how does Rogue fly or Storm or what is the other end of Iceman`s slope attached to or-?
    You know what? F*ck this...

@CodeJocker Thor`s hammer weighs about 4.5 quadrillion pounds, and before you ask; magic.

"So, Stan, if the hammer is light enough for him to swing around, how does it have enough mass to pull him along"

It weighs as much as a mountain. That is why Hulk cannot lift it. Thor can lift it, because he is worthy.

"or, for that matter, how does Rogue fly"

    Low level telekinesis.

    "or Storm"

    Wind. Updrafts. Tornadoes.

"or what is the other end of Iceman`s slope attached to"

    Wherever he took off from.

    "Explain the Silver Surfer."

He is made from Galactus. He can do whatever because he is.

It`s the radiation from our yellow sun; duh!

Heck, if the Christians can explain away the creation myth and the great flood that came from nowhere and left no trace, then why shouldn`t we suspend disbelief and buy into Superman`s powers?

At least Superman never told us to kill the Jews and Muslims.

@auburnjunky, you can`t use the word telekinesis to explain away someone flying as if it`s a real thing. Giving a word to something doesn`t make it real. What are the principals behind telekinises? How can brainwaves move physical matter? aduh

Stans got an interesting grasp on science. Seriously when Stan created this character he was actually a god. I know they have updated him to an alien lately, which makes him no different than Super Man really. The only logical explanation I`ve ever heard of how Thor`s hammer works would involve magic, not science.

sorry stan your logic is flawed. you imply that the flight is caused by the hammer being released and that it pulls thor along with it. the problem is based in simple physics, to achieve enough energy to pull that weight you have to build it up then release it, what then is holding the energy while it is building. as soon as enough energy is available in the system is should pull thor and keep him from remaining stationary and achieving the needed energy. i am disappoint

I think his point is not that a flying god/alien/whatever could really exist, but that at least they tried to offer some kind of quasi-scientific "explanation" that, while ridiculous and impossible, at least attempts to help suspend disbelief by "sounding" plausible. None of it is real, of course, but in the case of Superman, they don`t even attempt to explain any of his powers. It`s the old "because I said so" excuse.

"Superman flies because nobody ever told him he couldn`t."
One of the stories deals with that: He becomes convinced he`s Clark and nothing more.
    It ends with:
Sups: "Oh, yeah. I can fly!" *wakes up beats the snot out of everyone*

Rogue`s flying ability came from ms marvel iirc. Silver surfer does it by something Galactus created. If there was anything close to a diety it would be him

It`s not that the hammer is light, Thor is super strong, that`s how he builds up the power. If Stan says it`s true that`s good enough for me.

If you have half a brain you would realise that the first time Thor spun the hammer round he would fly off the ground. He wouldn`t be able to spin it 30 times then decide when he was going to take off the energy is either there all the time or none.

    Puppies:

Thor is one of the strongest Marvel superheroes. He nearly rivals Hulk, who is the strongest mortal superhero in the Marvel universe.

He can spin the hammer wherever he wants. Don`t forget, that he is holding it by the handle when he spins it. it is only until he lets go that it flings him.

It`s characters from comic books, pure fantasy, does there really need to be a scientific principle behind it?

I`m fairly sure, but not certain, that Stan is being sarcastic...

(Hint: Thor`s flying is just as silly as Superman`s, eh?)

But Superman really does bug him! That much is true! He really is a lame-assed kind of `hero`.

    Time travel?
    Move planet Earth?
Solve every crime on the planet at once?
    Lame-o!
