Well, it was the Christians who stole Christmas...
@WhoDat: Um, No? Christians didn`t "steal Christmas" eh? It`s the anti-Christians who are currently trying to "Steal Christmas" AWAY from the Christians... THAT is the subject of this thread. One of them anyhow.

Nor did Christianity "steal" some other religion`s festival: they COPIED it! 1600 years ago according to your own link.

You -imagine- I didn`t KNOW all this already? I studied this sh*t in high school: Western Christian College = Church Of Christ (non-instrumental) boarding school.

The POINT is that you`re so darn worked up about what ONE religion did 1600 years ago? But don`t notice that ALL the other religions did it too AND that atheists are trying to do TODAY what you`re condemning the Christians for doing 1600 years ago.

"I`m not going around saying Kwanzaa should be illegal, like certain (but not all!) atheists are doing that for Christmas. You DO agree? Eh?"

Like I already said, this about Christians & Christianity, which happens to be the dominant religion in North America, not just the USA. That`s the reason more people are focused on what they do as opposed to Muslims, Hindus, etc. I never said anything about making anything illegal, which you`re claiming, so I`d appreciate it if you stop putting words in my mouth. That`s the biggest problem I have with you, you constantly make false assumptions and accuse people of saying sh*t they never did. I`m just giving a history lesson as to where your supposed Christian holiday came from.

The Roman festival which the Christians "stole" wasn`t copy-written.
The Romans stole it from someplace else!

The "early Christians" picked that date for several reasons. Still? It doesn`t matter if it was the 24th or the 26th: it`s an artificially chosen day! It would "infringe" on SOMEONE`s previous "festival day" disregardless!

WHO is going to FORCE Christianity to change the date? You?

Do you know how "Kwanzaa" was chosen? It`s every bit as "fake"! Even more so: it claims historical authenticity where there is NONE. It was CREATED in 1966 ffs!

Wiki Says

I`m not going around saying Kwanzaa should be illegal, like certain (but not all!) atheists are doing that for Christmas. You DO agree? Eh?

"It`s only "evil" when Jews or Christians do it... just ignore EVERY other religion on Earth, ever!"

Well, it was the Christians who stole Christmas, which is what this thread is about, therefore I`m making fun of all you wacky Christians. Since Muslims don`t celebrate Christmas there`s no point in mentioning them in this discussion. I`m an atheist, remember? I despise all religions equally.

Get a grip and stop jumping to conclusions, a$$hole! You really need to learn to keep your emotions in check.

I grew up Christian, became pagan, and now ... meh, I`m a church going Chragan I guess ... and even as a pagan I was never offended by "Christmas" or nativity or "God Bless". It`s the sentiment that counts. If someone wishes me that their god will bless me, whether I believe in their God or not ... that`s a gracious thing to say and I appreciate it. Same with Christmas - I have kids and I love the holidays so I`m celebrating from about Labor Day to Easter, but especially Halloween to New Years ... and I could care less what label ya put on it - Christmas, Yule, Holidays ... whatevs.

@WhoDat: So? So what? You`d rather "blather on" about things that happened over 1,000 years ago, while ignoring what`s happening TODAY eh?

Fine!
Those people that Christians "stole the festival" from? ROMANS! YOUR LINK says that! THEY stole it from earlier peoples themselves! Duh!
Two can play at this stupid game... at least I know it`s stupid...

Hells Bells! Romans made it a foundation of their culture to "borrow" foreign religions! You act like The Pope freaking INVENTED it in 350?!

Oh! And I suppose the Muslims invented ALL their holy days and festivals and such FROM SCRATCH! Do some research: Mohammed "borrowed" from "defeated religions and cultures" ON PURPOSE... but it`s A-OK for Islam!

Right @WhoDat? It`s only "evil" when Jews or Christians do it... just ignore EVERY other religion on Earth, ever!

"some folks some where in North America (usually) or elsewhere get their panties in a twist over the "Christianization" of a holiday. Namely: Christmas."

That`s because the Christians stole the holiday & many of its traditions from the Pagans in the first place.

There`s plenty of "evidence" in your bible that points to Jesus NOT being born on or around Christmas Day, Dec 25th. The Christians basically decided that since people were already celebrating sh*t at that time of year they`d hijack the holidays to spread their religion.

@Runemang: Your statement simply is false.

Every year, for decades now, some folks some where in North America (usually) or elsewhere get their panties in a twist over the "Christianization" of a holiday. Namely: Christmas.

Go look for yourself! No number of links & facts I could present would sway your opinion. I know of literally HUNDREDS of stories, both local from other cities, of Nativity Scenes being BANNED not only on Gov`t property? but ON CHURCH GROUNDS!

Bing For Yourself! It`s So Easy!

Nativity Scenes is just ONE example: there`s dozens more. From Santa to X-Mas Trees: Someone, somewhere, wants them banned! And sometimes governments do do it!
But as you point out it`s a HUGE stretch to accuse Christians of "stealing" holidays
You mentioned how midwinter celebrations are common among cultures. It`s true that Christians did adapt the holiday to suit their own purposes, but to say they "stole" it would mean that every following iteration built on it could be "theft" as well.
would you like to get rid of all 4th of July stuff, for example? Do you consider celebrating the independence day for the USA as being an offence against multiculturalism?
If cities want to want to have annual celebrations that`s their prerogative. The ONLY thing that would offend me is if they were paid through sales taxes when they should be funded through user fees. Other than that, I don`t see how it offends multiculturalism since they tend invite every demographic for a show.
I dislike how multiculturalism is implemented in practice
If you`re referring to the way some governments mandate it (or try to) top-down, then I wholeheartedly agree.
Do you think we should celebrate things like president`s day or veteran`s day?
Only if you want to. If you don`t no one should really care.
would you like to get rid of all 4th of July stuff, for example?
<sigh>At times I suck at I articulating my positions. Should CHRISTMAS be recognized as a NATIONAL HOLIDAY? Absolutely not, though in fairness it probably isn`t. But as you point out it`s a HUGE stretch to accuse Christians of "stealing" holidays. Nonetheless no one is forcing anyone to celebrate Christmas in a Christian manner. No one is forcing anyone to celebrate Kwanzaa or Hannukah. Rightfully no one should. THAT was my problem with patchouly`s statement.

My opinion has always been this

No one should be offended by someone saying Merry Christmas to you, the same as I would NEVER be offended if someone wished me a Happy Hanukkah or Happy Divali, or Merry Kwanzaa, or if a store chooses to use the all encompassing Happy Holidays, Whichever greeting you get because it always means the exact same thing.

Best wishes to you. Have a good celebration, enjoy f##k!n winter. It`s not like if you accidentally use the wrong greeting to the wrong religion it suddenly means something terrible. It makes more sense to just use the greeting of your personal holiday. It should be considered as nothing more than saying the same thing in another language. Comprende?

@Ani187 - Agreed, I also worked at Target on the backroom team over the holidays right after I got out of the Marines. I know people who worked out on the sales floor, like my gf (who I met working there), had it worse because they had to deal with customers... err.. I mean "guests" all the time, but that experience was what finally destroyed the last shred of enjoyment I ever got out of the holidays.

Bullpoo. Show me how often people were offended by nativities, Christmas, etc. It`s turned into a damn urban legend.

This all started when stores, responding to NO COMPLAINTS WHATSOEVER ... decided they didn`t want to risk offending Jews and Muslims and athiests, etc, etc, etc (and limit themselves only to Christian money) and changed to a non-religious "Happy Holidays". Then CHRISTIANS, feeling more put-out than Jesus did while nailed to the cross, blew a holy gasket at the stores and even moreso at the Jews and Muslims and athiests ... who had never said poo to begin with. ... and it`s only gotten worse since then.

"Christmas", "Holidays", "Kwanza", "Festivus" ... Christians are the only ones I have ever heard bitch .... ever.

The government doesn`t promote Christmas, but it is swamped under a pile of people offended by a nativity scene or a cross. Nobody sues due to the lack of a nativity, it`s all the super sensative perpetual-offendeds out there. You don`t believe in Christ, good for you, but don`t try and take it away from the people that do, you super enlightened Scrooge.
What`s the point of having them? We`re a multicultural society after all, government doesn`t need to be promoting some traditions over others.
A midwinter festival is a holiday across a huge number of cultures past and present, so the general idea isn`t attached to any culture. National holidays don`t necessarily promote one culture over others.

Also, I think there`s nothing wrong with national traditions anyway. Assuming you want to have a nation at all, of course. You`re from the USA...would you like to get rid of all 4th of July stuff, for example? Do you consider celebrating the independence day for the USA as being an offence against multiculturalism?

Finally, I dislike how multiculturalism is implemented in practice (which is nothing like the PR spin put on it).

I`d be all for keeping the Christ in Christmas...if that`s what they meant. But they don`t.

If a Christian wants to celebrate Christ`s Mass as his birthday (even though their own bible says he wasn`t born in midwinter), then that`s fine by me.

If a Christian wants to usurp the entire midwinter festival and steal all of it as a tool for forcing other people to pay for promoting Christianity, that`s not fine by me...and that`s what almost all of these people are doing.

So I`m all for leaving the Christ in Christmas, but supported only by churches. Everyone else (schools, councils, etc) can support the midwinter festival that`s what most people are actually celebrating.

Shun them even? Give me a break. Take your one sided, thieving selves away from the public and let the rest of us enjoy the Holiday Season.
