"Technically it`s a super typhoon and not a hurricane."

I am not sure that your pedantry is much comfort to the 11,000 (and rising) dead, the bereaved and the great many homeless.

These people have just suffered a 7.2 magnitude quake, then a monster storm, no matter what you wish to call it.

Yes. You are correct. The Pacific Ocean is larger, so the storm has more time to ramp up. The ocean off the Indonesian coast is also hotter than the Caribbean Sea, because of the Indonesian Throughflow. Hot ocean = stronger storms by and large.

That wasn`t my point. My point is, they are the same weather phenomenon.

@AuburnJunky:
On the surface yes, but being in a completely different basin can mean they can get a hell of a lot stronger.

There has been no hurricane to date that`s ever been stronger than the strongest Typhoons.

The only difference between a typhoon and a hurricane is what they are called. They have different names because of region.

They are the same weather system in every way.

Technically it`s a super typhoon and not a hurricane. Typhoons generally get a lot stronger than hurricanes due to the fact that the Pacific is larger, can get warmer, and therefore can have a lot more potential heat energy stored in it. Sometimes, Atlantic hurricanes do get strong enough to rival some super typhoons, like Allen, Gilbert, and Wilma.

Also, this was the strongest tropical cyclone to EVER make landfall in recorded history.
