Listen to what this guy is saying, Sethdog et al. Being a peaceful, modern Islam is NOT prescribed by the tenets of the religion; the people you know have gone this way of their own accord. Being a violent, intolerant, ignorant, sexist Muslim fits well within what Islam teaches.

ROFL!! Ya it was a land of rainbow and gumdrop smiles before the big bad USA showed up! Sadam was such a great guy! Pretty much says it all on your knowledge of this subject. BTW the US wasn`t the only country that got involved in Iraq it just so happens your country did as well....

So, what you`re saying is, they were born into a Muslim family, but they don`t actually believe all that crazy bull$#!+.

@McGovern1981 - Opportunity? To escape a corrupt regime? Because they like it here? The same reasons other people would move to another country. I have Iraqi friends that moved here to get away from the carnage over there which was started by foreign invaders (GOOD OL USA SPREADING "DEMOCRACY").

Also I`m from New Zealand, not Australia.

Islam is in no way, shape, or form a "religion of peace." It a religion of conquest. All Muslims are called to spread Islam through holy war, or Jihad which they will not stop until they have established a world-wide caliphate. Conquered people are offered three choices: conversion, slavery, or death.

Charles Krauthammer said it most succinctly. "The borders of Islam are bloody."

OMG Hitchens had bad teeth. I had to scroll down.

"The only problem with Islamic fundamentalism is the fundamentals of Islam."

I was raised in "Born Again", Lutheran, and Pentecostal churches, which ever one was providing free babysitting. A lot of nice folks with good intentions in the churches and some strange brainwashed ones in other organized groups.

@llaa: Controversy and conspiracy abounds! lolz! There has never been a shortage of it throughout human history.

I am mostly un-familiar with the Apocrypha But I got a heavy dose of the Gospels, Acts and Revelations :-)

I went to a boarding school where they didn`t play musical instruments in church: yeah `fundamentalist` but they were all nice folks!

God offers a religion of love, and that`s just what we all need.

Missing word. Should read as, "Pretty much a lot of the NEW testament..."

@5Cats

Pretty much a lot of the testament is based on Paul`s letters which were written by a man that did not know or meet Christ beyond divination.

And among the four gospels, the Gospel of Luke was written by Luke, Paul`s physician and disciple, so I wouldn`t include it as Canon since it was far removed from the gospels of Matthew, Mark, or John; the oral tales purportedly by one of the 12 disciples of Christ. Check out later biblical Pauline Apocrypha, its full of more Saul/Paul weirdness that governed the early Churches.

@Gerry1: Buddists are currently killing Muslims and burning their villages to the ground in Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

Just pointing this out...

@llaa: Um, dude? EVERY part of the New Testament was written AFTER Jesus... I mean, obviously? It really should be obvious.

I do know what you`re saying: they were written down decades later. Same goes for the Torah & Koran and afaik many other "religious texts" too.

The "Saul The Traitor" theory is an interesting one, but it`s been bandied about for 2,000 years now, not likely to overturn Catholicism with it...

The gospel of Matthew (written after Christ) says some nasty things about the Jewish people cursing themselves. This passage continues to be used to attack the Jewish people for over two millenniums.

I have a high regard for both of these guys. Harris I agree with about 75% of the time, he tends to give mysticism and woo a bit too much leeway and his support of racial profiing for security is roblematic but in broad terms he has a oint.

I`m rather in awe of Hitch`s debating skills and really miss the magnificent bastard but I can`t undrstand his support for the Iraq war.

@FoolsPrussia

Christ never said anything bad about himself, he was a jew. Christ never said anything about Christianity, since there was no such faith while he was alive. Christianity owes its creation to mythology of Saul of Tarsus. The muslim faith sees Saul/Paul`s teaching as blasphemy (I dont doubt their claim, he is a fraud who never met yeshua but said he had a vision while blinded) hence their disgust of Western Christianity (i.e. Catholic/Greek Orthodox Christianity.

If I ever have a Damascus moment then I`ll be forced to change my mind but otherwise Paul/Saul is a fraud and Islam is right to not like Christian fraud/faith. But hey, they just replaced Saul with Mohammed...

@ elderban - Buddhism is peaceful. If you commit an act of violence it is against the teachings. Buddha never told his followers to kill anyone.
and had rules of decency in war.
@panzerlenis: Um, Mohammed himself -personally- slaughtered whole towns and cities FULL of women and children.

Peaceful? "Decency in war"? No, never. Yes they had `rules` but those rules included mass murder as being blessed by Allah!

>> They were no better OR worse than any other culture at the time: Europe, China, Japan, Black African, North American Indians, Aztecs, Incans? ALL of them fought brutal, bloody wars. I cannot think of a single exception.

BUT you`re correct: Culture (society) has a LOT to do with it too!
I`ve said that many times: the `desert tribalism` that Mohammed forged into Islam is still present in modern Muslim nations.

Westerners SHOULD keep that in mind at all times.

"Encumbered by Political Correctness" = BINGO! The man`s a genius, and it`s just the first 30 seconds!

Bonus: Rev Jim Jones reference!

He is absolutely correct: It`s not:
Religion
Fundamentalism
Extremism

The PROBLEM is ISLAM as practiced by SOME of it`s followers! And the people who are most responsible for STOPPING these bad people are their fellow Muslims.

And they`re doing a piss-poor job so far...

Nice one @jinxjinx34! 4.0

How much of it is the religion, how much of it is the society? The first vid didn`t dig very deep and it skipped a lot of info that undermines some of the main argument.

A thousand years ago the roles were reversed. The Muslims were more peaceful, technologically advanced, and had rules of decency in war. Christians by contrast were barbaric. They raped and pillaged everywhere they went. The religions themselves haven`t changed much, but the societies that practice them sure have.

So blaming the religion for all of this mess seems too simplistic for me. To borrow from the gun lobby, Religion doesn`t kill people, people kill people.

No religion is a religion of peace. Look at all of the hate those that proclaim themselves to be a part of any other religion spew.

Religion is nothing more than an excuse that people use to spread their hatred toward another.

And people wonder why I am agnostic...

The top video was funny "The problem with islamic fundamentalists is the fundamentals of islam"... Never heard it put better.

The second seemed the most reasonable analysis I`ve ever heard of islam...if he is an expert. I will have to google his authority to speak on this topic.

muslim/islamic/arabic culture is simply primitive and has not caught up in social evolution with the rest of the world.

I`ll have to watch the Hitchens clip later, but Harris never explains his reasoning here. The people who interpreted the teachings after Muhammad`s death often manipulated or distorted things. The same thing happened with Christianity. For example, Muhammad viewed Jews and Christians as his allies. When the Bin Ladens of the world call them infidels it`s because their understanding of Islam has been influenced by scholars who inserted their own prejudices into their interpretation.

Jesus certainly never said anything about persecuting Jews or homosexuals, yet these are both groups that have been attacked by Christian groups.

Islam is undergoing its reformation now, just as Christianity did when it was a younger religion. There are violent extremists as well as liberal reformists, and both sides are wrestling to define what Islam will be going forward. Attacking the religion won`t help empower the moderates.
