I`d say 60% chance that it`s a Poe. The third one pushes it a bit by building the setup, then using misdirection away from the more obvious answer (genesis) as a punchline.

The rest I wouldn`t argue as I`d believe someone would believe them, but that one sticks out as something other than uptight fanaticism and idiocy.

Has to be fake...not that people don`t believe those things. The wording is unrealistic however. "Everyone knows that" "Tyson is a heathen" "Now that`s just silly" either that or it was typed up by a....oh wait....well I really hope it`s fake anyway XD.

i am just curious how people think he tried to destroy pluto, does he have some uber telekenetic power we didnt hear about yet? or maybe laser sight? ( has to be pretty precise then i guess ) or maybe ultra fast rockets?

Come to think of it, no matter how he would be able to destroy pluto, it would be ver powerfull, so yeah, this dude seems to have the power of a god, lets be wary of him ;-)

Poe`s Law in action. Poe`s Law, for anyone unfamiliar with it

I`m going with satire. No one would interpret downgrading Pluto`s classification from "planet" to "dwarf planet" as "destroying Pluto" - that`s like saying changing the name of Bombay to Mumbai destroyed the city of Bombay.

I know its fake because of the lack of fear. "now that`s just silly" is a good example. Christians who don`t believe in evolution feel their way of life is being attacked. They fear the swell of popular opinion will drown out their beliefs.

No one is going to say its silly when talking about what they perceive as attacks on their belief system. Every Christian I`ve seen fighting against evolution has been FAR more defensive than the tone in this letter. The way his "sins" are called out don`t really inspire a call to action for the believers.

    Fake.

    (1) Most scholars agree Genesis was written around 1440BCE. Pluto was discovered by astronomer Clyde Tombaugh in 1930.

    (2) There is no god. Evolution on the other hand, is scientifically proven.

    (3) If Genesis was written in 1440BCE, I wouldn`t trust it as a contemporary historical document. It purports to tell the story of events that it itself claims to have occurred 2,500 to 4,500 years before it was written. In truth, "creation" is best estimated at 13.8 billion years ago.

    (4) Haha! I see what you did there. You re-defined `truth` as your position. Therefore, anyone who doesn`t agree with you is a liar.

They say the devil`s in the details. If your book contains all the details, it must be the Devil. <--- You see, duff religious circular logic based cuts both ways. Just be glad I didn`t have you rounded up, tortured, forced to recant and burned at the stake for doubting science.

Not drowned out, disproven beyond all reasonable doubt. Christianity is the remnant of a null hypothesis dangling from the last 1E-nnn of probabilistic real estate.

pazerlenis: Although I agree that this letter seems to be an obvious fake, it`s not because of this, "Christians who don`t believe in evolution feel their way of life is being attacked. They fear the swell of popular opinion will drown out their beliefs."

The Christians I know are not afraid of any scientific theory. What we are concerned about are the application of such theories, such as what eugenicists and racial purity became in 1930s Germany.

There are several scientific theories trying to scare and manipulate the public into approving laws and rules that are not in their best interests. Manipulating data for profit and political agenda is nothing new, both governments and industry have been doing it centuries. Now it`s being done to widen the gap between rich and poor, to create a new elitism, a new nobility.

Unfortunately, no. This is NOT satire.
The group gets its name from the bible quote:
"Through Jesus, the Bible introduces us to a Father who is the way and the Truth." (John 14:6-7)

Their goal is insure "Biblical Science" is taught in all public schools.

They are on Facebook and easy to find if you care to look. I choose to not give them the Hit Counts.

However, if it turns out there is a Hell, I am of the same mind as Swaywithme.

Very true...but I doubt it`s astrophysicists who are the ones doing it. I`d be impressed if they were able to manipulate and oppress by using knowledge about distant stars.

They forgot that he has cloven hooves, breathes fire and I did see him eating at Mephisto the other night. Don`t ask.

Jak, I know what you say but, you don`t speak for all Christians. I have met MORE THAN A FEW that really do think the planet is less than 7000 years old.

BTW, people are trying to become wealthier. That`s normal.
No one is trying to make anyone poor. That`s destructive. Anything that makes you and your money weaker makes "them" weaker, too.

@Draculya, so you have proof there is no God? That said, I cannot prove there is a God. That said, I read these comments and once again I must warn against the dangers of lumping all Christians in to one generalization. It`s easy to pick out the extremists and point and laugh and say "See! All you religious folks are nuts". Most of us aren`t like this and are very open to scientific discovery. Just saying! I believe it only strengthens my faith, not destroys it.

Any scaremongering theory where they say the world is going to end or catastrophe will result is false. Scaring people is NOT in the scientific method. Fear-mongering is always bullsh|t being fed to the masses to force new taxes or political agendas.

I want astronomers to go further and apply similar categories to moons. It seems insane to me that satellites like Prometheus are even considered in the same category as Titan or the Moon. Most of the so-called moons are so small they haven`t even become spherical due to their own gravity.

Most astronomers already have. The term "moonlet" is a natural satellite too small to be considered a full fledged moon.

Cracker, doesn`t religion do a fair amount of scaremongering also?

I think most people realize that most doomsday scenarios are just unlikely but plausable possibilities of what could happen. I don`t believe any scientific theories can really scare educated people. Through science and reasoning however we can explore the idea that we aren`t invincible on our little blue planet and that we do certainly have the capacity to make life really bad for future generations. To me that`s forward thinking, not scaremongering.

spanerbulb: "doesn`t religion do a fair amount of scaremongering also?"

I know that islam and a few other religions are all about scaring people. But Christianity is about love and hope, not fear.

"To me that`s forward thinking, not scaremongering."

If you`re talking about the "Cold War", yes I guess that was reasonable to be scared of nuclear war. But since we`ve walked away slowly from that edge we no longer have a credible fear of worldwide calamity.

Vim, I`ve posited and tested that question.
Of the ones that think the planet is less than 7000 year old,
-some believe humans and dinosaurs existed at the same time
-some think dinosaurs came before humans and were "disposed of."
