Shooting out tires is only easy in the movies and tv shows
You know what else only happens on TV shows? hitting a gas tank with a bullet and it explodes.
Say he DID shoot out the tire while she was driving at high speed? How safe is that for those kids?
So one how safe is it to have your kids in a police pursuit and two why should they put the safety of an offender over the law abiding minding their own business on those roads?
Always glad to shine a light on what white people refuse to acknowledge.
Shall we shine a light on what "black culture" refuses to acknowledge or will we get the that`s racist defense to absolve any responsibility per usual?

"...the cop was obviously trying to shoot the tires out."

Most cops bullets miss their target, especially in this situation, so that cop was equally likely to either hit a child or the gas tank. Shooting out tires is only easy in the movies and tv shows. That`s why shooting at fleeing vehicles was outlawed in the `80s. Say he DID shoot out the tire while she was driving at high speed. How safe is that for those kids? That cop was out of control.

Nope not when she choose to let her son assault an officer and flee both felonies which endangered people obeying the law around them. God forbid you don`t allow that sort of behavior....

I`m sure you all know that it`s against the law for the police to shoot at a fleeing vehicle.

My first thought was, she could have avoided it all if she had just cooperated. My second thought was, man, how bad do black people get treated by cops for her to be that afraid of cooperating with the cops? That why us white people can`t understand this behavior. Cops don`t hassle us as routinely as they hassle black people. Predictable bogus outrage by the white IAB men in 1,2,3...

I suppose they shouldn`t have shot at the van with all those kids in it. On the other hand, one of these days they`re probably going to end up having to shoot them all anyway.

I`m appalled at just how many of you Americans are defending the cops - "Even if they did nothing wrong the cops don`t want news reports showing a video of them shooting at a car full of kids. Bad Press." Nothing wrong??/ Shooting at a 6 year old is nothing wrong?? Yeah, you`re all correct that she`s at fault for endangering her kids - so? Doesn`t mean that a 6 year old should pay with his life for having a stupid mother. Get a grip it`s traffic ticket, she`s not a murderer and they already have her licence plate and a video.

@Runemang yeah, best thing for the cops to do would be to pursue from a distance and put a warrant out on them if they do escape.

OTOH, the woman was asking to be shot and to have her kids killed by trying to escape. I hope she had a reason worth taking the risk for.

The mom`s a dumb bitch for not cooperating, and obviously she`s breeding more stupid idiots if the 14 year old gets out to fight the cop who had yet to do ANYTHING over the line with the mom.

Having said that, everything was justified right up to the idiot from stage left that decided to open fire. Did HE know there were kids in the car (kinda hard not to at that point I`d think, but still ... it wasn`t the beginning cop).

OK. Everyone who thinks it`s just fine that the cop may have been shooting at the tires? Try to remember that bullets sometimes ricochet (know that word?) and can then hit other things like, for instance, A F*CKING GAS TANK FILLED WITH EXPLOSIVE FLUID! NO! It`s not okay to shoot at a car filled with kids unless they start shooting at you. Especially when you can, as a cop, radio ahead and arrange a road block. The episode started because the driver was a supreme idiot. It continued because she was an idiot. One of the cops then got infected by her idiocy, turned into an idiot, too, and started shooting, not just perpetuating but magnifying the danger that the driver initially exposed those kids to.

McGovern1981,

`If I ever commit a felony remind me to have a getaway van full of kids`

Well, if you have actually committed a felony and are on the run that may be a good bet because obviously cops are not going to open fire on a vehicle full of kids.

Oh, wait. Forget it. They will open fire.

CaptKangaroo: I did, several times. But by all means, pinpoint the exact time you perceive as an attack or assault.

"I guess if you drive away-flee- then stop again, cops can just do as they wish"

Nobody claims that. But she did act like a complete moron. If your cops get shot at a lot, I`d expect them to be cautious of anyone hysterical trying to flee. Repeatedly.

On the other hand, yes of course they could have handled it way better than they actually did. I am not arguing that point, I agree.

But some people are defending her as if she did nothing wrong whatsoever, even though she did.

@Gerry1: Because his back-up was there. He didn`t need to get them out of the van that very minute! No one was in any danger.

No doubt the woman`s lawyers will (with some justification) say she was terrified and feared for her children`s safety and THAT is why she fled! The angry cop should have backed off and let others handle the situation.

Of course: Why she fled the FIRST time is another matter. She has no excuse for that. Probably threw her baggie of pot out along the way...

5Cats,
`But I think it`s a more reasonable action than shooting at the driver.`

Under the circumstances, that`s setting the bar pretty low.

`That cop "lost it" there.`

Exactly. Stop hiring cops that lose it in trivial situations.

`... they`re on vacation & travelling.`

Maybe a little paniced by cops losing it and then driving, in a panic, to somewhere well lit and with people around? Because you were scared of the cops for good damn reasons. Bang bang.

Comply.

Really? The kid attacked a police officer. If you do that and don`t willingly step out of the car you are hiding in they will get you out one way or another. In similar situations young black men have been shot and/or beaten severely. Not that he deserves that but it happens often enough he should have known better.

@TheOrigin: I wondered about that too: why not block her in? She`s already fled once, she`s proven to be a high risk already! It seems, in hindsight, like a good idea.

@LordJim: I didn`t say it was SMART or proper police procedure to shoot the tires! And probably it`s illegal. But I think it`s a more reasonable action than shooting at the driver.

I`d also say that smashing out the window was a serious over-reaction! That cop "lost it" there.

They still have 55 zones in the USA???

There were "drug paraphernalia" in the van (two "pot pipes") = probably the teenage son`s ;-)

This happened in New Mexico.

When she pulls up to the hotel? it looks like her left rear tire is low...

... well out of order.

(Come on, I was well within 1000)

Some of these videos show horrible acts of violence and gross injutice but perhaps more troubling are the more trivial ones without violence which show seemingly endless footage of adults in a position of authority (and armed to boot) throwing tantrums, screaming into faces, because they don`t feel they got enough deference, respect or instant compliance to their whim. Of course I only know what the internet shows me, but it does seem that it might be a good idea to improve standards of recruitment to law enforcement.

Obviously we have problems with our cops too, but I can`t recall seeing many videos of them just losing their tempers and over-reacting.

CaptKangaroo: attacking? at what point exactly? All I see is her running away from a cop after being detained for speeding away (isn`t that a felony btw?) from a normal ticket situation.

"Right or wrong, you see a person assaulting your mom, you likely take exception to it."

So if your mom was involved in a different felony or crime, would that still hold? If a cop apprehended your mom after she attacked somebody? Or if she say, stole a purse? Would you still stick to that sentence if it were a different offense?

Again, she broke the law and escalated the situation. I am not sure about you and your country, but over here that is a no-brainer and every dolt knows that such behavior has consequences you will have to face.

What you all are seemingly willing to ignore is behavior that lead up to the shooting. We didn`t see the first chase, second chase, or much of the interaction.

What we did see is a teenaged boy attack an officer for no reason.

A mother behaving insane.

A cop shooting at the van.

It is impossible to know how informed the officer was of the passengers of the van, as he was a supporting officer that arrived later.

It is also impossible to know exactly what he was targeting, whether gas tank, tires, or driver.

However, with what evidence we do see. I feel that preventing someone from putting other people in harms way with a 2000 lb vehicle justifies the use of deadly force.

The claims of "that`s racist" are hilarious though.

An unarmed person cannot start a fire-fight. Can`t be done. When only one side has guns it`s not a fire-fight. It`s armed people shooting at unarmed people.

5Cats,

Is shooting out tyres a recognised technique in law enforcement in the US? Because the cop clearly failed to do it effectively. In the UK a cop discharging a weapon will have to show that he or she had good reason to believe that there was a clear and immediate danger to life and no other action was possible.

I see what you mean about the danger to traffic, but when hot pursuit becomes a serious traffic danger cops are obliged to drop the pursuit. Pick `em up later, they had video and registration and it was only a traffic ticket. Maybe with a ticking nuke in the back...

In so many of these videos the issue seems to be compliance. Not keeping the peace or serving justice or protecting the citizenry. But a cop`s rage if you do not comply, even when he or she is legally

Gee Oystah, don`t hold back so much.

I bet Mother & Son get off or just minor slap on the wrist. Yes she clearly instigated the whole event with a bunch of stupid choices, but the police will want this video and story to just go away so they`ll cut her loose. Even if they did nothing wrong the cops don`t want news reports showing a video of them shooting at a car full of kids. Bad Press.

What I don`t understand is this: she ran away previously (ok anyone in their right mind would be aware that this is not something the cops will let slide by so easily), so when backup arrived why didn`t they block her off? Everybody is a general after the battle, but they knew she ran away previously so cutting off any possible escape route would seem...reasonable?

Also, with all due respect she was obviously wrong from what is shown in the video - if it was because of a stupid ticket...

Really? The COPS endangered these kids? REALLY? This nutjob wackadoo could have killed those kids not to mention someone else`s. Shooting cop was clearly shooting at the tires. Initial cop got attacked by not only her but her son. Also, you have to wonder why in the world was she acting so weird? What the hell is all that poo on her roof? Give me a break people. If that`s their mother`s usual behavior, this is probably the least traumatizing thing these kids have been through. She`s a freak.

He could see into the van and knew there were passengers, and he seems to be aiming DOWN, not at the back of the van.

Bakcagain21 except cops aren`t supposed to pull such stunts like on a TV show. They`re supposed to be trained to fire when there`s imminent danger to life and shoot to kill. So they can`t shoot at tires or kneecaps and what not.

It looks like he could be firring at the tires to stop the car escaping, if so I don`t see a problem with it. Mother has escalated the situation and caused problems, car chases are dangerous she could have crashed. And shooting anywhere else on the car would make no difference whatsoever, so only logical place is the tires. Ironically perhaps a bit of overbearing police work i.e tasering the kid would have stopped the entire situation.... think about that....

Police are SUPPOSED to be trained to de-escalate situations- we don`t see much of that anymore in the land of democracy, leader of the free world.
What we see is police, drunk with power, full of arrogance, initiate and escalate violence- then lie(Perjury) on official reports and in court. They go unpunished as they`ve `followed guidelines and department policies`.

The mother can be held acountable for driving off, for restisting arrest, for endangering others and her children by drivin on the wrong side of the road (mind you after the cops fired, a certian leeway should be given for her state of mind) throw the book at her i don`t care. but throw the book at the cop who endangerd the life of those kids as well.
