I think I`ll pass on going to Japan.

If we ever get around to inventing the holodeck we`ll be extinct in two generations.

Yeah, Japan is one messed-up place!

But they make GREAT cartoons! :-)

And actually? Many nations are on the same path to ZPG (Zero population Growth) which is considered a "bad thing"...

I`ve never understood the enthusiasm for Japanese cartoons. Mind you, I`ve never understood the whole grown-ups liking comic books thing either.

I`m probably missing something. I have close friends with rich and fulfilling lives and distinguished careers in industry, academia and the arts who are well into that stuff. They spend money on this stuff, the sort of money which makes me goggle.

(I may have bigged up my social circle a little and I goggle easily. But 120 quid for a book of comics? )

I suppose I quite liked Scooby-doo and have a lingering affection for it. Early, classic Scooby-doo, obviously. Not the degenerate parody it later became. The filth who poisoned the most morally serious cartoon show ever should be shunned by all decent people.

I`m not denigrating or having a go at adults who still like super-heroes and cartoons. Really, I know smarter and happier people than me who do that. I just have never understood it.

ZPG is a bit worrying if you are pushing sixty. I`m going to need a lot of young people to pay for my old age.

It`s also a problem for those pushing twenty. You are going to be paying for a lot of old people who have expectations and a vote.

Jim, anime, unlike western cartoons, is a film language that fits in a similar position as soap operas.
Western cartoons are closer to childrens` stage theatre.
As I type this, "Code Geass, Lelouch of the Rebellion" is going on the other PC. A bare ass`d shot of a girl in a shower is on the screen.

Expensive western comics are so because the art skill level increased through the 90`s so that the work is sometimes related to museum art, increasing the collection value.

As for myself, I`m just into the narrative, soap opera aspect of both anime and western comics. I like the story implications more than the science fiction but, would not buy it without the sci-fi.

I love this guys assumption that because the population isn`t pumping out brats left, right and center it`s a `decaying nation`... what utter bullpoo.
I see a decaying nation, they`re procreating like rats, and it`s not Japan folks.
