    As an engineer he should be ashamed to say that the displacement of that beast cannot be known.

    Ooops! The title got destroyed by the ""

    The Ratte: Planned Nazi Super Weapon

    Plz fix! Thanks!

    @Thonious: lolz! Quite true! Should be easy to figure out.

    These "monster tank" designs were actually submersible! The Nazis knew that no bridge would hold them, so they made them water-tight with a big "snorkel"...

    Really it`s too bad that thing would have barely been able to move or traverse its turret.

    Might have been useful in the North Africa campaign. It would have been a bitch to get it over there, though.

    Bigger target for the air force, would have made no difference

    Trying to build a battleship on the ground. Not the smartest idea they had. Even the really smart ideas they had were delayed so much they weren`t effective. Germany could`ve had jet planes back in 1939, V2 rockets back in 1940.

    @CrakrJak
    Jet aircraft weren`t very effective during the war though. They went to fast to properly engage the standard propeller craft of the time.

    @Tovarish: You`re thinking of the rocket planes? Like the Me-163 Komet? The rate of fire on their cannons was too slow, but otherwise they were deadly.
    They also tended to explode for no particular reason... :-/

    The Me-262 was superb at what it was designed to do: shoot down heavy bombers.

    The whole concept of a "land battleship" was popular throughout the 30`s, several nations built or designed them. But in a mobile war? You`d just drive around them and let them run out of gas...

    OldOllie,

    I`m no engineer but it doesn`t look to me as if it would have done well in deep or soft sand.
