    Excellent post. It used to be about atmosphere. Now it`s about adults co-opting something that kids did better than them.

    Funny that back then kids would go through all that effort and probably get crap for candy and now they hardly even wear a costume and get all sorts of good candy.

    Halloween should be scary, it`s not about boring fancy dress; it`s about horror. Not sure why so many people can`t grasp that.

    Jake: "Now it`s about adults co-opting something that kids did better than them."

    It was originally for adults to begin with, then we tamed it down and made it for the kids. So it`s more of a re-co-opting now.

    @CrakrJak

    "So it`s more of a re-co-opting now."

    That`s one way to put it. Your average adult dressed up for a Halloween party isn`t thinking about All Saint`s Day, or mummers plays, or dressing up to go "souling" door-to-door. As kids they wore costumes and went trick-or-treating, which is a relatively recent practice. So, they just "adultified" it by removed the trick-or-treating and keeping the cosplay. It`s the kids that will enter into the really spooky aspect of the day.

    In `99 I dressed up as Protestant Missionary. Guess I was a couple decades too early for that to be truly terrifying.

    Awesome! If there was a haunted house filled with these I might actually be scared going through it. So tired of paying to go through an exhibit that claims to be terrifying, with "safe" words and needing to sign a waiver and then being bored out of my mind. Just went through one in Los Angeles that had a lot of the the things an annual exhibit has in my own state. Boooring and no imagination!

    I want to dress up as Mary See, the candy lady, but my mask is tricked out so that all of a sudden, my eye falls out. Then I cackle, and ask the kiddies if they`d like a really special treat. Grumpy doesn`t think that`s funny. Poo on him.

    I have some ideas, but I have a bad enough reputation with the neighbours.

    Idea (1) Dress girl up in a sunday dress and pig-tails and a bow, but make it look like her eyes are stitched shut.

    Idea (2) Boy dragging half a dog on a leash.
