Woman makes mistake of thinking she can plant what she wants in her own front yard.

@patch and Gerry

If the city was really concerned about cosmetics they`d be dealing with ill-maintained sidewalks further down the road, not getting on this woman`s case. If it became clear she was failing to maintain her own impromptu farm, only THEN would it be appropriate for the city to step. This on the other hand is a knee-jerk reaction akin to "zero tolerance" policies in schools.

Another thing to consider is that when these laws were passed most cars used leaded gasoline. The tetra ethyl lead in the gasoline was making the ground toxic up to 50` from the roadway. Since the lead is persistent, the front yard gardens can easily absorb the toxins. So, front yard vegetable gardens are generally not a good idea.

Sorry, but your curb look does affect the general housing prices. You can`t park a car on cinderblocks in your front yard, you can`t paint racial slurs on the front of your house, and you can`t grow feckin` corn.

Her garden looked okay, but the next person will have a horrid mess, so "no"."

I agree with Gerry, 100%. It`s not her, it`s the precedent that you set. Can you imagine all the gardens that are left to rot? Gardens that are overgrown with rotting vegetables in them because half way through the season they decided they didn`t want to do it anymore.

And...you can`t say:
"there are weeds down the street in the empty lot."
because as you learned in school, two wrongs don`t make a right.

This is another reason why California sucks ass.

Busybody code enforcement officers, Deranged parking regulations, Insane licensing requirements, Outrageous fees and fines for everything under the sun. It`s no wonder people/businesses are getting fed up and moving out of state.

The city gained it`s interest when the easement for the sidewalk went in and regulations for conformity were established at that time. This is an example of bad government. I`m always bashing republicans but this is probably the result of bonehead democratic thinking.

the deal was around my childhood street was anything beyond the sidewalk isnt your property, its the cities. so if there is a tree you want to cut down but it is beyond the sidewalk you would need to consult with the city first to have it removed. but you can do pretty much anything you want to on your side of the sidewalk. like leaving up christmas and halloween decorations all year, (zombie santa is a huge hit) or never mowing the lawn, but since this is the nice suburbs of canada chances are some one would mow your lawn for you. not because theyre nice but because they got fed up of looking at my overgrown lawn everyday.

Land of the free, just not free to do what you want with your land.

Liberals live to boss people around and take their stuff, and in the process, the end up ruining everything they touch.

Everyone needs to do this. You can literally get 100`s of pounds of fresh vegetables on a tenth of an acre. And they taste wayyyyy better.

Just ridiculous. We should utilize the land available to us but instead we waste it on "perfect green lawns". Seriously?! Makes so much sense.

LandoGriffin I would by that whole "The purpose of the ordinance is because roots from a tree, for example, can damage underground water lines or power lines." If i didn`t see Five (5) trees @ 27 sec in, right where they are bitching about her stuff. And I am pretty sure every street by her has tree lined streets. So the whole (The purpose of the ordinance is because roots from a tree, for example, can damage underground water lines or power lines.) is invalid.

I wish this source wasn`t so biased. The purpose of the ordinance is because roots from a tree, for example, can damage underground water lines or power lines. Therefore, one needs a permit from the city before digging or planting anything.
