    My dad let me have a puff on his cigarette when I was about eight. I choked so bad I never tried it again. I`d say that was a good move. My parents also let me have a little sip of beer now and then as a little kid and drinking alcohol is no big deal for me now. Making things forbidden and mysterious gets kids in more trouble than letting them explore.

    @lauriloo:
    My mom let me try a puff at about that age... I smoked for 27 years. Quit 8 months ago but still doing the gum.

    I remember my parents would let my brother and I have a beer when we`d have pizza ordered in. I drink every day now. I`m drinking as I type this. But now it`s gin.

    In the old pre-anally-retentive days, many parents would let their kids have a sip of beer or one small puff of a cigarette just to satisfy curiosity. It was no big deal.

    I used to go along withe the idea that letting kids have a small glass of dilute wine over dinner (or whatever the proletarian equivalent is) de-mystified drinking and led to better habits.

    Looking at my friends and myself forty years on I`m not so sure.

    granted, I think the type of people you hang out with while growing up is also a big factor, probably bigger than what your parents do. All my friends were good, smart kids in choir and musical theatre. I didn`t hang out with druggies and kids who were always getting into trouble so I was never tempted to join in.
