Despite the market closing "down," we still have the DOW in 15k+ territory - other key markets are equally impressive. These points represent a hsit ton of $$$$$$. If Romney were president, he`d be trumpeting "his" success as a leader and the Tea Parody would be throwing parades in the streets.

@ Shamrock: "Pass a law that the majority of people don`t want and then refuse to negotiate, but it`s all Tea Partiers fault, right?"

If Americans hate Obamacare so much, how come they reelected Obama and voted so strongly for Democrats in the last election?

Obamacare was signed into law in 2010, examined and approved by the highest court in the land, and its namesake was re-elected in 2012. Per the Constitution, this is how legislation gets enacted in this country. You ignore all this recent history and, like a Tea Partier, talk as if the ACA was somehow imposed by martial law.

If you want to get rid of Obamacare, then contribute to political campaigns, knock on doors, get more senators and a president elected. That is how democracy works. Not by holding a nation hostage if you don`t get your way.

48 ways a govt shutdown will screw you over.

Personally I`m most worried over those kids with cancer who need their NIH treatment, the CDC and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. But no biggie right?

And then there`s the fact it costs our economy over 300 Million a day every day it`s shutdown. But what`s the harm when you have all the fun of watching the world burn, right?

Oh just read this great tweet I just have to share encompassing the shutdown negotiations (such as they are):

"Can I burn down your house?"

    "No".

    "Just the 2nd floor?"

    "No"

    "Garage?"

    "No."

"Let`s talk about what I can burn down."

    "NO."

    "YOU`RE NOT COMPROMISING!!"

"You do realize if you pass this bill you would be forcing people to buy something"

Uninsured Americans stick hospitals with as much as $49 billion in unpaid bills a year. That is a problem and a reason why healthcare is so expensive. The people that pay their bills have to cover the share for the people that don`t.

You have to legally buy car insurance to drive? Why shouldn`t you have to legally buy health insurance to get healthcare?

Ever heard of the Health Equity and Access Reform Today Act of 1993, which included a requirement that individuals purchase health insurance?

It was written by a republican and co-sponsored by 19 republicans including Bob Dole.

The democrats put the mandate in the package FOR REPUBLICANS as a compromise to get them to vote for the bill, or at least not filibuster it to death.

Now that is the point they are using to try to kill the whole thing.

The real problem is these republicans are keeping their campaign promises. They said they would work to repeal Obamacare if elected. They were elected. They are trying to repeal Obamacare like they said they would. It seems they didn`t know that you are never supposed to do what you said you would do.

@ Scheckydamon: How is the Senate`s failure to present a budget proposal since 2009 relevant to the government shutdown? I don`t see the connection, so please explain.

What I *do* see is an extremist wing of the Republican party that lacks the votes to repeal Obamacare per the constitutional process--despite trying and failing 42 times--now having a temper-tantrum and holding the nation hostage because it can`t have its way.

(Yes, you read that correctly: Tea Partiers have tried and failed to repeal Obamacare 42 TIMES. What a waste of the legislative calendar.)

2 things to remember about Obamacare:

1: It was sold to the American People as a subsidy. As a welfare program if you will. Americans were told they would have choice. Obama was adamant that the penalty was not a tax.

The Supreme Court declared the law was constitutional, IF AND ONLY IF the penalty was a tax. Otherwise, it was illegal. Of course, after saying it was not a tax for 2 years, Obama said it was a tax. We were lied to. (Not to mention Obama claiming you would keep you doctor. Premiums would never go up. It would save everyone $2500 a year, etc.)

2: Nancy Peolsi saying "We have to pass the bill to find out what`s in it. THAT WAS A SIGN!

It is a good thing for this country that the brave Republican house is holding the government hostage. Obamacare is tyranny, and revolutions hurt. It`ll be over soon, and we will be better for it.

Don`t forget, the government shut down like this 8 times (by Democrats) during Reagan`s tenure. 3

Do YOU know what a furlough means?

    From wikipedia:

"In the United States, a furlough is a temporary unpaid leave of some employees due to special needs of a company, which may be due to economic conditions at the specific employer or in the economy as a whole."

Where are you getting that information? As far as I have heard it is up in the air.

    From ABC News:

"The American Federation of Government Employees estimates 800,000 to 1 million federal workers are furloughed and it`s not clear at this point whether those workers will get paid for this period. After the shutdowns of 1995 and 1996, Congress authorized back pay for federal employees, but it is not clear whether that will happen this time around, leaving these workers nervous."

@ Auburnjunky: I understand where you`re coming from and respect it. But according to this recent poll reported in the (very conservative) Forbes magazine, two-thirds of Americans want Obamacare to take effect (67%). Two-thirds. That kind of support is consistent with Obama`s re-election in 2012.

The law was passed in 2010. The law was then challenged and upheld by the Supreme Court. The Tea Partiers tried to repeal the law 42 times--and could not get the votes. As of right now, most Americans want to see the law take effect.

This isn`t a noble revolution of patriots fighting for what Americans want. This is a group of 30 extremists, out of step with what most Americans want, who are holding their breath--and shutting down the government--because they can`t get what THEY want.

2 basic facts you need to know.

#1 Harry Reid has been Obama`s de facto veto on funding legislation since 2010. The house has sent dozens of budget proposals to the senate and Reid hasn`t allowed a vote on ANY of them.

#2 The above stonewalling has allowed Obama to blame the Republicans for the budget impasses when it`s Obama and Reid that are at fault for not even allowing a budget to go to the conference committee.

Was there a delay? Hell ya. Between 2010 and 2012, the number of applications the IRS received each year seeking 501(c) certification doubled and when the Obama administration requested that Congress increase the IRS`s budget by $1 billion to allow the agency to hire 5,100 additional agents, Congress instead reduced the budget.

The people in charge of the scrutiny were republicans and democrats.

"So, wait: Is there anything to the IRS story or not?"

As I recall the only link of the white house to the IRS was that the president had a few meetings with an IRS head.

The names on the list were to add additional scrutiny to political groups applying for tax exempt status. ALL political groups.

Some of the names on the list were:
    Tea Party
    Patriots
    Israel
    progressive
    occupy
    etc

The scrutiny was a reaction to the huge rush to create tax exempt groups so people could pour money into politics after the citizens united ruling.

Two facts, but missing facts to balance it. Yes if the House passed a clean CR then the Senate would pass it. However the House has passed several (4?) CRs. If the Senate passed those then the shut down would end, and you would get the Panda Cam back.

    Draculya

That is precisely how democracy is supposed to work. It is supposed to be partisan. If it is not then the people are forgotten, and all decisions are made purely for the ruling class in cosy agreement.

    Sleepyhallow

    "Americans DON`T negotiate with terrorists."

The POTUS socialises with them, and they help him launch his political career. Then in office he agrees with them, and openly voices support (OWS, Libya, Syria ...).

Sure. For perspective, my brother works for Border Patrol; it`s considered an "essential" job.

My mockery isn`t pointed at those who are not being paid; that sucks. However, I am mocking all of the doomsayers who proclaimed that a shutdown would lead to mass pollution, chemical dumping, unsafe food and water... etc.

So far, the only consequences that I`ve seen are people without government jobs. Unfortunately, that probably means that their jobs weren`t all that important. Of course this begs the question, why does the government employ "non-essential" personnel?

Trying to blame this on one party or the other is just plain and outright stupidity. I voted for my Rep (who happens to be Paul Ryan), because I WANT them to stop Obamacare by any means necessary. If this is what it takes then I say Huzzah! I don`t give a rip who is to blame I just want this legislation that is truly awful and hurts people (I`m out thousands of dollars since 2009 as a direct result of Obamacare) to be ended and something much better put in place, I say keep the government shutdown right into the debt ceiling talks. Let`s end this all now instead of who knows how many more years down the road. If we have to take this to ridiculous extremes, then so be it. The Republicans are not doing anything the libs haven`t done numerous times in the past. So, again I say, let`s have it out, come up with the correct solution, then go have a beer.

@HolyGod: Obamacare raised the limit you could claim against your taxes for medical from 5% of your annual taxable income to 7.5%. That means that if you don`t spend more than 7.5% of your income for medical (as opposed to 5% before) you CAN`T WRITE IT OFF YOUR TAXES. In my cancer treatment, I usually go through about $5000 out of pocket per year. I could write that off before. Costing thousands of dollars.... that`s f`ing how.

@phosphoreign. You are out thousands of dollars of tax write off`s because of Obamacare and you are not happy about it. I am pretty happy about it, because I shouldnt have to be making your taxes through my taxes. Isnt that your argument as well? You shouldnt have to pay for everyone else? Or does it only work when they are a different skin color or financial status and isnt you?

@5catz. If you think what the republican offered were compromises, you need to relearn what that word means. A compromise is not when one side says "I dont want cake" then the other side brings a different flavor of cake back and then gets mad when they refuse it again. They republicans havent been trying to compromise on the healthcare issue, why would the democrats? It has to work both ways. If you dont like this law, too bad, it is a law. They were hired to uphold the laws of the land. If they dont like it, quit. Just stop wasting everyones time

@bophus: #1 It was Obama`s sworn policy from Day Zero: NO COMPROMISES at all! You`re blaming the wrong side.
#2 The Repub House has PASSED 6 funding bills which are now "stuck" in the Democrat Senate. HOW is that not the Democrat`s fault?
Especially since Obama has sworn to VETO anything which touches his precious ObamaCare in any way, shape or form.

The White House (Obama) has ordered many gov`t agencies to ILLEGALLY shut down the most popular and helpful things the gov`t does. You think the WW2 Memorial is BARRICADED BY ACCIDENT? The WW1 Memorial isn`t barricaded...

Tell me again how it`s "not Obama`s fault"... he`s had 3 years to "work with the other side" and even his own side!! Nothing. SCOAMF.

    @ Phosphoreign:

This is a blatantly one-sided political post... bad form for an "entertainment" website... seriously Squirlz, bad form.
Oh please. Spare me your high-minded objection to "blatantly political posts" on an "entertainment website."

First, political links have ALWAYS been a part of the I-A-B mix.

Second, I just went through 5Cats` last dozen posts that openly ridicule the U.S. president or openly ridicule liberals: NOT ONCE did you offer even a single word of objection.

Bottom line: The majority of Americans feel the government shutdown is harmful to the country and hold the Tea Partiers responsible. If you can`t accept those simple facts, you`re going to have to live your life inside a reality-proof bubble.
