One good but very strange movie is Mirror Mask about a teen age girl who gets trapped in her drawings and the only way out is to fight an Evil Queen. Little that she knows that the Queen`s real daughter has stolen her identity in real life.

The Fall is definitely worth watching. The scenery is just flat out amazing. The Fountain is also a great flick even though it took me a few times to get what Darren Arnofsky was trying portray.

Bernie was a fantastic movie. It`s based on a true story that happened not too far from where I live back in the mid 90`s. A lot of friends who lived in Carthage, TX at the time said the movie was pretty spot on to what happened in real life.

Definitely, "The King of Masks." A modern classic!

Also:

"The Happiness of the Katakuris" -- a dark comedy by Takashi Miike.

"20th Century Boys" -- a Japanese sci-fi trilogy.

"The Call of Cthulhu" -- a 2005 adaptation of the Lovecraft story made like a silent-movie (mirroring the time in which the original story was written).

"Trollhunter" -- Very original Norwegian horror film.

What no Repo! The Genetic Opera?! All of these movies are awesome but none are really "fun". Survive Style 5+ Is my recommendation for a 2000`s "other" flick, category is: Japanese Comedy WTFness.

My favorite underrated movie, only getting a 6.7 from IMDB, is THX 1138. It`s a great sci-fi dystopian George Lucas flick. At least Rotten Tomatoes gives it a 90% fresh rating.

Constantine is another movie that should have a higher rating at both IMDB and Rotten Tomatoes.

Nice to see Moon up the top there. One of the best pure sci-fi films for many years and certainly one of the best British movies.

@TheZigRat: You should put up Internet Movie DataBase links to your suggestions! It would encourage more people to check them out.

Shawn of the Deaad was VERY popular and made lots of money, hardly "underrated" eh?

@MyKunter: Knows the "linky thing" works! I`ve heard good things about Tideland, but I hated Brasil SO MUCH I find it VERY difficult to trust Gilliam again...

@Gerry1: Flesh Gordon was 80`s... and p0rn...

Anyhow? Here`s some ideas for your NON-BORING type movie viewing! :-)

@sutra

"One of my favorites and I think underrated - Election"

If you mean the Johnnie To classic, then I agree -- although I would put "Exiled" even before that.

Also, a very, very interesting Hong Kong slasher film called "Dream Home," starring (and produced by) Josie Ho.

This is great! It`s so hard to find really *good* movies these days. I`m always looking for lists like this. I liked `In Bruges`.

I would like to suggest one. It`s a movie that is "not for everyone". You will either love it or hate it. Tideland

One other really good movie but I forget when it was released was "Dark City" the Directors Cut (The Theatrical version spoils the movie by telling you all the important bits at the beginning. The Directors cut is shown in such a way you learn the important details as the Main character learns them. It starts out as a man with no memory at all wakes up in a hotel room with a dead hooker. Ebert spent over 2 hours comparing this to 2001 A Space Odasy as far as the skill involved in making this as well as how brillent the plot is. The villians from this movie were coppied several times and used in other movie one of whioch was Puppet Master 6. You know you have a good villian when it`s stollen in almost every aspect for other movies.

One Really good animated movie that was released at the same time as Monsters Vs Aliens and there by pretty much unnoticed for that reason was "Terra". Although it was originally concieved as a childrens movie it`s plot quickly became extremly dark, loadedf with adult themes. It`s a movie about a happy eden like planet that is invaded by Strange and Extremly Hostile aliens bent on exterminating all life there. About a third of the way in One learns that the Invaders
require to terraform the planet after destroying their own and conciders Genocide the only way to do it. These Invaders called Humans, will stop at nothing to concure the local race including germ warfare and poison gas. Later in the film you learn that theTerrians are not as sweet and innocent as was thought. They too held an extremly dark secret. Ebert gave this movie 2 thumbs up when it was released.

Enjoyed "Moon," "The Descent," "Immortals" and "The New World." Had high hopes for "Valhalla Rising." It started out promising, but became VERY static after a while and remained that way.

I would add a 2003 Dutch movie called "The Memory of a Killer," about a hit man suffering from Alzheimers and "American Mary," a unique horror/thriller by the Soskia sisters, who also wrote/directed "Dead Hooker in a Trunk." It`s set in the underground body-modification culture.
