I`ve gone 3 days without sleeping, at work. Yeah, I was getting paid, overtime too, for watching a booster pump 24 hours a day. Didn`t hallucinate, but still can`t remember the drive home.

Fell asleep, and I mean fell into my bed, clothes on, shoes on and didn`t wake up for over a full day. I slept for over 30 hours.

Thankfully my mom didn`t ask questions, took my boots off, put a cover over me and let me sleep. Had some really messed up dreams though.

When I`m sleep deprived, I get the giggles, it`s really bizarre.

I work nights, and sleep deprivation is often
and when you do sleep after 40 odd hours of being awake
you have the most weirdest dreams - nightmares going

Sleep is no problem, thanks to the miracle of alcohol.

I always thought that the 11 days limit was a lethal limit rather than just a ` that`s as long as anyone has gone`.

When my 2nd marriage broke down, I went 8 days with no sleep at all... in the end my mum spoke to her hippy neighbours who grew their own weed and brought me half and ounce down from scotland to where i was living in the south of england - it wasn`t the best weed I`d ever had but i had a great night`s sleep after it. She`s never offered me weed again, and doesn`t approve that i do indulge every now and again...but she was there with a bag of it when i needed her. Mum`s huh... what would we do without them.

Sci-fi writer J.G. Ballard wrote a short-story called "Manhole 69," about three men who undergo a medical procedure so that they`ll never have to sleep again. At first it`s great. They`re getting a lot more done, etc. But after a long period of non-sleep, they begin to hallucinate and feel as though they`re growing, that they`re getting so big they`re even filling up the room and pressing against the walls.

Ballard`s point was that people need time away from THEMSELVES, that you can`t live with yourself 24 hours a day, every day. If you try it, your ego takes over and YOU become the center of the universe like the guys in the story. Sleep -- the "manhole" -- was the safety valve.

May not be science, but it was a DAMN good story.
