Ha! wrong again, science. They always claim mathematics is fundamental to any civilisation.

I`m so glad this finally got posted. I read it in the submissions stream quite some time ago and loved it. It is a jaw-dropping study.

"Ha! wrong again, science. They always claim mathematics is fundamental to any civilisation."

Great thing about science, it`s always ready to admit it has been wrong when faced with facts.

Drawman61, science is not wrong, Mathematics is present but in qualitative form not the quantitative that we employ.

Iit makes total scientific sense that the cognitive development is adept to the needs of their culture.
What I find disturbing is how surprised they are at the deviation. It is our lack of understanding of the adoptive capacity only in increments.
Its quite alright to be adaptive in reduction. Very economical and uncomplicated. They also do not have a concept of religion. Beautiful simplicity of existence, that is aslo observed in other life forms.

How the hell does their culture not need to differentiate any number between 1 and 4? That doesn`t make practical sense at all. "Hey Larry, we`ll need (word for 1 or 2 or 3 or 4) spears for hunting tomorrow", doesn`t seem like they could function all. Were these scientists sure they weren`t saying something else?

"They always claim mathematics is fundamental to any civilisation."
    ----------------------
it`s a matter of how advanced the civilization is. obviously it`d be tricky to build rockets without knowledge of numbers, but why shouldn`t a `simple` society exist without an extended system for counting.

i hazard a guess that perhaps the fact that piraha live in a tropical climate without the need to maintain food stocks makes complicated counting unnecessary (?)

lol, obviously the facebook site of a piraha will boost their ego ("hey, i only got one friend, but you got so MANY"! "oh, you too. and you!")
