If one of those animalistas ever tried to douse a biker gang with fake blood, you could charge admission for the fun and games that would follow.

I have been pointing this out for YEARS! Every year at Sturgis PETA fails to appear and throw paint on dead animal wearing people...because if they did us animals would be wearing dead people :)

Good point. However...aren`t most of the leather jackets made from leftover hides from the meat industry?

The exotic furs that those b*tches wear are, more often than not, torn from dead (but sometimes living!) animals and the meat is just thrown away to waste. That makes it quite a bit different I should think.

Unless you are vegan...then maybe it is the same.

    McThstlpnts,
Good point. Still, if anyone assaults any of my family because they`re wearing an animal derived product of any kind they`ll find themselves covered in blood...their own!

leather is a byproduct of the meat industry, if you`re going to throw red paint at them, you`ll have to throw red apint at everyone who eats meat.

    Leather =/= fur.

I wear leather (not in the sense, y`know, of `wearing leather`. Not that there`s anything wrong with that.) But I do have a problem with the fur industry and would not feel friendly towards someone wearing exotic furs. I would judge them on that.

Wouldn`t make an issue of it, just would avoid their company. Fortunately I am not often called upon to be in the company of fashionable women wearing exotic furs. But if I were, by god I`d snub them.

@LordJim: Yes, BUT they both are made from the skins of animals.
They are, in fact, the same thing!

Especially in the eyes of PETA and other "Animal Rights" kooks, er, groups!

    Same... darn... thing!

It`s all about "marketing" eh? It has nothing to do with common sense. The paint-throwers I mean, not people wearing leather jackets & shoes...

    OK.

Animals killed for food are different than animals killed for luxury.

Isn`t most leather harnessed from animals being slaughtered for food?

There aren`t people just skinning cows to make jackets are there?

Madduck - I love the chicken but not to keen on the fox hunt. I know it`s traditional but the wee fox it torn apart by the dogs when it`s finally run into exhaustion. The chicken has a quick death.

@HolyGod: Not that I`m aware of! Lolz!
But if leather cost as much as mink fur? Then it would happen.

Many other animals are "harvested" just for a tiny portion of their anatomy.
Shark fins? Bear gall bladders? Tiger penis? Rhino horn? Elephant ivory??

Nothing from cows, pigs & chickens gets wasted. Sheep, goats & horses too.

I agree with @HolyGod, most of the animals have been killed for food and they are just simply not wasting the hide/skin, which is a good thing. Except for things like snakes and crocs ect where they are just butchered for the leather.

@Quacktor: So says someone from a TROPICAL CLIMATE!
Tell that to the Eskimos! (Inuit) It gets COLD up here in Canada!

Leather is just "fur" with the hairs scraped off. It`s a fact.
    Snakes & gators provide "skins"
    Mammals provide "hides"
A "pelt" has fur on it.

Learning at IAB! It might happen...

I go to bed early, right, firstly lets tuck Squrlz into a ball on my lap, Gerry- chicken possibly have a quick death- but not all, more though- the fox has a great life- then a death in seconds wheras the chicken has a horrible life for about 12 weeks. Leather is not a by product of meat - or at least, not necessarily. We do not `need` meat- or leather to live. Having said that- I have no issue with meat, leather- or fur- IF and only if, the animal involved has a nice time being alive, and a damn quick and painless death. People get vague about what aspect of meat, fur etc they object to ..

And... @SwayWithMe - WINS THE POST!

Congratulations! Do you prefer a tiara or a blindfold? o:-) or }-) ?

@madduck and @ferdyfred have to share the "Most Common Sense Comment" award. Ask @FancyLad what that is, eh? I`ve never won it... :-(

But seriously? Leather, wood & farming are what allowed humanity to leave the caves. Without them we`d still be in the Stone Age. Not joking! (ok, and pottery too...)

When "done properly" (as @madduck" mentions!) they are -infinitely renewable- resources. :-)

Cheers 5cats, but honestly- I wear fur- very very old and ratty fur from jumble sales because I hate waste and it is ever so warm in winter and I do not want down- just as cruel. I would never condone making an animal suffer though- in a trap, or a mink farm- just for fashion- just as I avoid these miracle beauty creams tested on poor rabbits- sheer vanity and very cruel. It is pain, and suffering which I loathe

@madduck: I understand! I`d never want to see animals suffer, I`d boycott ANY company that allowed that. Luckily our local laws are pretty vigorous, and the local producers keep high standards. Chicken & pork, mostly. Bison & elk too.

Throwing things at the Hells Angels for sport = fun! Usually fatal for guys though.

Assuming most leather jackets are made from the leather of an animal who`s meat would also be consumed, I don`t see much problem with it. I see a problem with killing an animal strictly for the fur. If you take leather from a cow that is being killed anyway for meat, it`s not a big of a deal. So I find myself opposing fur while supporting leather. I eat meat after all.
