I knew they`d f*ck it up by putting Seinfeld in the top 5. I agree with most of them being on list, but in a different order. MASH should be 1 or 2, and some near the bottom should be higher. They need to be rated on quality and longevity.

Voyager was better than TNG, but I would debate it being better than TOS. TOS dealt with a some taboo topics at the time and eventually opened the door for the whole franchise. IMO, DS9 was the best of them all.

So I`ve seen 30 out of these 40...
Some I`ve seen a few episodes, others I`ve watched from start to finish!

Any "List" is going to get criticized, but this one is "ok" by me!

@freddyferret: MASH suffered from "3 seasons too long" syndrome. It got really TERRIBLE towards the end!
Voyager was indeed better! But not as "ground breaking" and sadly not as popular. I loved it! DS9 used far too many "easy scripts" to pad their seasons...

@kitteh9: Should the title be Best AMERICAN TV Shows? I think they`re all from the USA, yes? Except 1? Some were filmed in Canada... lolz!

The Outer Limits, The Fugitive, Columbo, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, Route 66, Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, My Name is Earl, Farscape, Second City TV, Leave It To Beaver, Peter Gunn and The Untouchables.

Seinfeld being on this list AT ALL somewhat disturbs me... I can see how people might find the show entertaining, but I wouldn`t put it on this list if it were a top 50... And where are all the fantastic educational shows like `Through the Worm Hole`, `Nova`, or `Planet Earth`?

They go that Cartoon was great. So redo the list without those and we will talk.

Any list like this that doesn`t have Lucy in the top 10 is just a bad list. Desi Arnez invented the 3-camera system that is still in use today for filming sitcoms. The pace & timing. That stuff is still funny today.

Yeah, gotta agree with Star Trek being number 1 but Dr Who should be in the top 10, not the X Files and Firefy shouldn`t be on the list at all.

too many contemporary shows. House is not revolutionary and shouldn`t be on the list. I like Hugh Laurie but, no, that show isn`t that good.

This list was pretty much crap. There are some great shows listed, but the order is way off, and there`s a lot of dreck.

@lauriloo Firefly is pretty decent SiFi in the space western sub-genre. It`s free on HULU, but unfortunately you missed the start of the season by a few weeks.

It should start a new cycle in mid-to-late November. In the meantime, see if you can find the movie "Serenity." That`s the pilot for the series. If you like that, you`ll probably like the rest of it.

Frasier belongs at a better rating than Cheers. I enjoyed Cheers, but Frasier is far better.

DS9 was Babylon 5, after Paramount shot Michael Straczynski down and stole his idea.

If cartoons are going to be on the list, Avatar: The Last Airbender should be in the top 40.

    Still, a good list.

You can`t compare some of these shows with each other.
Lucy, happy days, All in the family are totally different shows than Firefly, Star Trek and Walking Dead.

Even the comparison of two series is totally different.
Although i was a fan of ST: TOS i can`t bear to see it anymore. When asked, I wouldn`t vote for it.
So i wouldn`t understand that, if this list was compiled recently, a lot of people would have chosen the Caroll Burnet show for instance.
If this list was compiled over time (highest rating received in the period the show ran) one could argue that in a time where there where almost no shows the rating for some of them would be higher then in a time where there are many shows.

All shows of a certain type, ignoring masses of television viewers.

For example, soaps: Coronation Street in the UK, or Neighbours in Australia, and no doubt countless others in other languages.

Notably, there are no non-English shows in that list.

Television isn`t just what the Reddit crowd like to watch. This list is mistitled at best.

It would be tough to pick just 40, but Your Show of Shows (genius comedy), Milton Berle Texaco Hour, The Ed Sullivan Show, Gunsmoke, One Step Beyond, Leave it to Beaver, The Addams Family, the Munsters and Captain Kangaroo are some classics that should be on the list (Check some of this stuff out on YouTube). I agree that the list overlooks a lot of great non-USA shows and Monty Python, The Black Adder and Mr.Bean would be on my list. My all-time favorite show is Mr. Roger`s Neighborhood. Fred was true master of children`s programming. He raised us well. Fred also gave us Joe Negri etc. to open our ears to music by master players.

@OldOllie, Serenity wasn`t the pilot, it was made after the series ended to finish up the story.

Scooby Doo is probably one of the oldest running series on there. They`ve tweaked a few things and the animations throughout the years.. but still. I think it should be on the list. It`s as deserving as the Flintstones if not more.

For people who want to know the method behind the list:

It is from a polling site that has tens of thousands of people who vote on the available polls. This particular poll had 526 TV shows named to vote on and the ranking is the popular vote of those polled. I only listed the top 40 because 1) Slightly lazy and 2) TIME.These things take me a long time to put together.

So it is not one persons opinion but the opinion of thousands that came up with this list. I am sure that the programs that others have mentioned on this thread are on this list just further down than the 40 I put up. I couldn`t list them all.

Kitteh9: so it`s more like a focus group to determine what the "best" shows are?

That explains how Scrubs made it onto this list.

I would have stuck St. Elsewhere or ER somewhere in that list. They were the first believable and entertaining ensemble casts in a medical setting.
And no westerns? Bonanza (24 years) or Gunsmoke (20)?
