The most evil human I ever knew is still alive and holds a significant positin in the field in which he was evil.

He`s an Indonesian scientist, or rather a manager of scientific research. I met him when I was a recent graduate working for VSO in Borneo.

But the research station had another task; to obtain viable agricultural land for the transmigration of urban poor from the capital to the out-lying lands. The urban poor were given the story - lovely farm, good schools and transport links, all the kit you need and support from the government.

So his brother-in-law bought the cheapest, swampiest land and he sold it as prime. Literally thousands of people were dumped in swamps with a few basics if they were lucky. There are no reliable stats, but up to 40% dead is plausible.

Little tosser used to play an annoying electric keyboard (about 1980). I sometimes google his name to see if the little bastard`s dead yet. Nah, still a big shot.

I disagree, I think one stake up the ass would earn you the name `Impaler`.

Why do they only do Modern Tyrants? I mean I don`t necessarily disagree with the list but I`m sure there were more evil people in the whole of history.

Gilles de Rais (1404-1440), Serial Killer of Children his life ended after he confessed to murdering at least eighty to two hundred peasant and servant children. The actual number of his victims will never be known, but some scholars speculate that de Rais killed up to six hundred children over a seven year period.

I noticed that Hideki Tojo, Leopold II, Ho Chi Minh, Vladimir Lenin and Mugabe were left off the list.

Tojo and Lenin definitely belong in the top 10.

The authenticity of the accounts of Caligula`s reign is debated. Character assassination was far from unknown in ancient Roman politics and it`s possible that he was far less bad than he`s portrayed as being by the writers whose work survives to modern times.

The description of his reign is odd because it describes an extremely radical change in personality after a serious illness. Allegedly, he became a completely different person. Prior to the illness, a capable, benevolent leader. After it, an insane violent psychopath. Truth? Fiction for the purposes of political propaganda aimed at demonising the emperor and restoring the republic? Impossible to be sure now.

I`d pencil in Commodus as the worst Roman emperor (for example, he proudly proclaimed that he had personally killed over 10,000 people), but it`s a tough call because there are quite a few to choose from.

I agree 100% with Tojo, he oversaw the japanese program of eugenics, medical testing on POWs and captured people. He ordered the butchering of so many people and soldiers.

I used to be against the bombing of hiroshima & nagasaki. I used to be, until I read about the medical experimentation and the bataan death march. The japanese were NOT going to surrender without a damn good reason. Unfortunately it came at the expense of so many innocent people, but that`s war. Both sides engaged in war, both sides accept the consequences.

Stalin and Mao were responsible for killing more people than everyone else on this list combined.

However, if you want to look at evil legacies, i.e., murder and mayhem committed in their name after their death, you can`t beat Mohammed.

Vlad probably saved christendom from the spread of islam. He lined the roads into Hungary with the impaled bodies of muslims (who may not have been alive during the impaling). To discourage further conflict. It`s not something that we`d embrace in the west today, but many consider it an necessary evil during hard and desperate times.

Atilla was just another strong conqueror in wilder parts during wilder times. He brought order and changed the world.

Mao was truly an evil force, but he was caught up in a barely guidable popular surge and probably couldn`t have done better, except with the benefit of hindsight.

Ghadaffi was a mean person, but his goals were no different than the power structure that governs America (concentration of power of the few over the many.)

I hate Stalin, but no other personality type could govern the soviet union in the state that it was in.

I believe Hitler wasn`t the madman that he is portrayed as and his followers were not all evil. They worked towards a goal that they believed was noble; a tidy world order that placed what they considered to be a pure master race in control, where defects (as many of the time saw it) were weeded out and where hard work, merit and contribution to society was rewarded, not bankers profiteering from the labour of the people while contributing nothing.

Yes, with 21st century hindsight that was all whack, but the ordinary germans were fighting for what they believed would be a better world.

We the allies may have won the war, but I am not sure I am particularly proud of what we have achieved since.

Mainstream religious leaders and their followers definitely should be on this list, as well as all those responsible for such things as carpet bombing and the occupation of Vietnam.

If you`re picking purely on people who are pure evil and gave absolutely nothing positive to the world, I`m not sure you could include Hitler for the sole reason that he did invent Blitzkreig (using tanks to storm forward and seize vast areas of land before the enemy could sufficiently react).

After all, a variation on this military theme was put to very successful use by General Norman Schwarzkopf in Gulf War 1.

That said, Hitler was still a total monster, but under the rules of the video must therefore be ruled out.
