    "astronauts but no space craft"
It was like that in the beginning. The shuttles weren`t up for this, anyway.

One of Ms. Ride`s mission took a shuttle to the limit.
I believe here words were something like: "The were so bright, you could see them with your eyes closed."

Why go to space when we haven`t even figured out how to deal with Earth properly?

    "Why go to space when"
At some time, we may need to get the hell out of Dodge. Should that day ever come, we probably will not have finished exploring the ocean floor before then. We should know HOW to out of Dodge get.

Four guys and they call them the eight balls? Why not the four clouts for the women?

At some time, we may need to get the hell out of Dodge. @ Codejockey, if that day comes you really think the powers that be will have reserved you a seat?

I`m about as conservative as they come here at IAB and still believe we need a viable productive space program and the funding for the Constellation program.

Without hopes and dreams, without goals to strive for, what the hell are we? Are we no longer explorers?

"think the powers that be will have reserved you a seat?"
Not a parfait`s chance at Weight Watchers` convention.
The technology required has to come into first, commercial then, private use. Most of the technology simply doesn`t exist yet. We`d be idiots to think it never will simply be we don`t know how yet.

When jumping to Mars is as common as getting on a crosstown bus, humanity will be in a better position to survive.

As long as there is a Democrat in office, we will not be expanding scientific study.

Apollo Moon landings? Republican in office. Apollo missions stopped in 1977, shortly after Carter took office.

Space Shuttle missions? Republican in office. Space shuttle missions were less frequent during Clinton presidency, with the exception of the groundings during the Challenger and Columbia investigations.

Obama shelved the Space Shuttle program, and stopped any further manned flights emanating from the United States. NASA re-purposed to also oversee Muslim Outreach programs.

"Apollo Moon landings? Republican in office. Apollo missions stopped in 1977, shortly after Carter took office. "

I`m sorry, I could have sworn that Kennedy put us on the track to land on the moon before the Russians. Silly school books. Of course you are aware that NASA missions take a long time to plan and execute and just because a republican happens to be in office when one happens doesn`t mean it was a republican that initiated the effort and provided the funds.

You suffer from the same lack of perspective as the people who don`t understand that it takes a while to get out of a republican-created economic disaster.

Eisenhower started the space program, actually.

Yes, Kennedy had the famous moon landing speech. At that point he would have been stupid to slow down the space program. Would have been suicide.

Also, he was the most Republican democrat we`ve seen in quite a long time. his Civil Rights programs were hated by most Democrats, but applauded by the Republicans in the House and Senate.

Also, our current economic failings were created by the Democrat congress of 2006. they were signed by the dolt George W. Bush, in an effort to appear bipartisan, and are being expanded by Barack Obama.

"As a moderate Republican, Eisenhower was able to achieve numerous legislative victories despite a Democratic majority in Congress during six of his eight years in office. In addition to continuing most of the New Deal and Fair Deal programs of his predecessors (Franklin Roosevelt and Truman, respectively), he strengthened the Social Security program, increased the minimum wage and created the Department of Health, Education and Welfare. In 1956, Eisenhower created the Interstate Highway System, the single largest public works program in U.S. history, which would construct 41,000 miles of roads across the country."

Eisenhower. If only the republican party were even close to being like republicans were then. Nowadays, Eisenhower would be a democrat.

For some reason, both were accepted. Must be a common misspelling about to become a listed word.

No he wouldn`t. He threatened the Chinese with nuclear annihilation if they didn`t back off in Korea. A democrat would never do that. They`d just keep drawing red lines to cross.

Why "astronoughts"? What`s so "nothing" about them? I don`t understand the insult.
