    Squrlz

This is really nice man. Can you give us excel laymen just a brief overview of how you did this? Did you have to manually plug all this in and choose size of name, etc, or can you script it to automate it somehow?

Anybody who votes this any less than 4 is a f.ucking tool. This guy put this together for all of us for nothing in return. The least you can do is appreciate the time and energy.

This is absolutely awesome. Fantastic job Squrlz, I feel like this makes for a really interesting analysis.

It`s also become quite a bit clearer to me why I end up at odds with Crakrjak so often--according to the chart, we`re pretty diametrically opposed in our views.

Someone mentioned the idea on the quiz thread, and I`ll second it here: this should totally be IAB`s first `Sticky.` Not only would it help newcomers size up the people they see around, but it would set the site apart from other aggregators in a way. Highlights the fact that while we have our fair share of disagreements, it`s also nice to have a website where you get to know the regulars fairly well. That`s something that just doesn`t happen on those bigger aggregator sites.

Nice effort, S4S. It`s too bad you couldn`t have found an honest, unbiased test.

For example, the first question. "If economic globalisation is inevitable, it should primarily serve humanity rather than the interests of trans-national corporations," is based on a false premise. It presumes that authoritarian central planners will use the coercive power of government to force one situation or the other. I reject both choices, but that wasn`t an option.

Unfortunately, all your hard work was mostly wasted.

@ All: Thanks, guys. I`m really enjoying reading your feedback and comments. I`ve got some observations to share. I`ll try to be brief and focus my thoughts in a few short posts so you can skip anything you`re not interested in.

    1. ON THE VALIDITY OF THE TEST AND CHART
This chart should be taken with not just a grain of salt, but a whole handful. I agree with the observations of several that the test has flawed questions and seems to skew liberal. Also, as Tsuroyu noted, topics that are not addressed at all on the test--police profiling and gun ownership, for example--make it difficult to score high toward Authoritarian on the Social scale. It`s also important to keep in mind that just 83 IABers, out of several hundred regular users, took the test.

All that said, I`ve found that the chart is still illuminating. It`s interesting to see the *relationships* on it--who`s left or right whom, who`s above or beneath whom, and who are close together.

Secondly I don`t see why some of our other commentators didn`t file a test, shy all of a sudden? It`s not like we`re not used to you in the fora, we can place you pretty decently anyway if need be....

    2. METHODOLOGY
I first captured the data in Excel, using forumulas to calculate the Activity quintiles. Here`s how the quintiles are defined:

    1st: 3,500 posts or 150 links.
    2nd: 2,000 posts or 100 links.
    3rd: 500 posts or 50 links.
    4th: 100 posts or 20 links.
    5th: < 100 posts and < 20 links.

I then generated a scatter plot chart in Excel, using a small font for the codes.

Next I reproduced the chart in PowerPoint and added the graphic refinements (font sizes, colors for the quadrants) there. No doubt someone more skilled in VBA than I am could`ve done it in Excel; for me, PowerPoint was the easier route. I set the PowerPoint rules to metric and created a 20 cm x 20 cm square. The rulers` numbers then made it easy to add the codes in the correct locations.

    3. WAS IT WORTHWHILE?
Absolutely. Here are just a few of the things I`ve learned from this effort, imperfect as it is.
    (A) I`m solidly liberal, but by no means on the liberal fringe on this site. I suppose because I`m often defending liberalism, I was under the impression that I`m farther to the left than it appears I am.
    (B) Even taking the test`s biases into account, it appears from this sample that a lot more IAB`ers identify themselves as liberal than conservative. This chart and the data table suggest there`s a triad of super-active conservatives--CrakrJak, 5Cats, and OldOllie--who are managing to hold their own against the liberal views from a larger number of users. (That`s not totally a surprise, but it`s interesting to see it reflected on the chart and in the data.)
    (C) I found it really interesting that, among the most active users, Auburnjunky is the centrist. That feels about right.

    4. WHY I DID THIS. WOULD I DO IT AGAIN?
The internet`s wonderful because it offers us better and more varied news than what`s been available through the mainstream media. The problem is that there`s a tendency for people to become isolated and narrow-minded from all that time on partisan blogs and websites. That`s why I feel I-A-B is so important: it`s a place where people with different worldviews can interact. Learning that others see the world differently than you, learning how to interact with them civilly, and maybe even learn something, is VITAL to a high-functioning society. This was my attempt to contribute to that dialogue.

(If you`ve ever been on the receiving end of less-than-civil dialogue from me, I apologize. Like this test and chart, I`ve got plenty of flaws.)

Lastly: Would I do this again? Perhaps in a month or two, if there`s an interest. I`ve already come across what I think is a better-structured test. =^.^=

But according to this test Barrack Obama is further to the right and more authoritarian than 5cats and everyone else here. That`s why I adjusted my answers."

Well then you didn`t really take the test and your answers are meaningless. This wasn`t a "hey, where do you think you are on this chart" exercise. Oh well.

What makes you think Obama isn`t more conservative and authoritarian than you?

He has continued almost every economic policy of the bush administration. As far as authoritarian? NSA wire-tapping and email monitoring of citizens? Drone strikes? Rendition? Torture? Medical marijuana raids? How much more authoritarian do you want him to be?

Political stance and opinions, values, knowledge and information aren`t the same thing. Why does it seem that in America, if you refuse to associate with a political party, you don`t have an identity?
This is the first year I`ve actually cared about the Federal Election (In Australia) because we have only just had two senate spots arise for the AMEP and JAP - Australian Motor Enthusiasts Party (because the police are all about the moolah) and the Juilan Assange Party (seeking transparency in government).

Demstar_Aus, it hasn`t always been such, but something happened in the late 70s called the "Moral Majority" run by a pretty extreme Christian preacher named Jerry Falwell (well, his is the most famous group--there were others). And they decided that Christian views weren`t being represented enough in politics. So they set out to align patriotism, being a "true" American, morality, "family values", anti-abortionism, Creationism, etc., to a political party. And things have become more nasty, more partisan, more caustic ever since.

It used to be our congressmen could disagree in chambers and then go out together after for a drink. No more. It`s become part of one`s identity--as is always the case when radical religion is involved. And, sadly, in order to counter that...

Anyway, I don`t want to politicize this post. It`s S4S`s post, but, I do believe that`s a big part of why politics is so much a part of identity here.

    Great job S4S.
My reading of this small sample is the majority of us actually believe in and want similar things out of our governments/society, call it what you will. We clearly have different ways of expressing it.
As for Crkr, assuming he answered it honestly, I think he should put down his weapon and back away slowly.

@ Anyone Interested: Since I spent much of last night poring over the chart, I thought I`d share a tip or two on its interpretation.

The higher someone is on the chart, the more traditional their views are likely to be on social matters, such as marriage; conversely, the lower one is on the chart, the more free-spirited.

The further right on the chart someone is, the more opposed they are likely to be to government attempts to moderate capitalism. For example, someone on the far left is likely to believe the U.S. Minimum Wage should be raised sharply; someone on the far right is likely to believe there should be no Minimum Wage at all.

Would we do this again, in a more precisely structured test? YES. I`m always fascinated by people`s motivations and worldviews, and this one could`ve been more detailed.

That said, I`m not surprised that I`m more Liberal than Obama, I`ve known that for a long time. The fact that Obama and consequently the party he leads is more to the Right than the Dem base is a common experience for Progressives (or my favorite term, Left 3.0) and it also belies the current insanity that holds Obama is some sort of Stalinist usurper for well, the insanity it is.

QueenZira: But what? We`re a good match politically. And I`m certain you`ll get used to having an open marriage in the commune.

Brillian Chart @Squrlz4! I love the text size thing and the red/black. Makes it VERY easy to read!

    Observations:
    >>Only 3 of us "above the line"? That just seems odd! 2 of us are "just barely" over it...

@ Drawman: A quintile is one of five equal groups that you divide a population into. In this instance, the 1st quintile consists of the top 20% of posters and linkers among those who responded. To have made the cut for that top quintile, you had to have 3,500 posts or 150 links to your credit.

(I describe a bit more about the methodology behind the chart in an earlier post in this thread.)

How much more authoritarian do you want him (Obama) to be?
@HolyGod: We find it interesting that Obama`s most vocal IAB supporters are in the "opposite corner" on this chart! Those who support him seem to HATE his policies! And those closest to Obama `policy wise` don`t like HIM at all! Or his policies, laws, actions and etc.

@Congradulations @CrakrJak! Now @FancyLad will e-mail you the secret code word to access IAB`s Sectet P0rn files... ;-)

@Squrlz4: That post has a nice, neutral analysis of the positions on the chart. I like it!

Q: Is it possible to add results & change the graphic? that would probably require a Mod`s help, eh? Just wondering is it was "easy to update" or "closed". (Layman`s terms! Forgive me!)

    @Squrlz:

Great work -- very well done. Could your quintile be furthered by including some factor of how long someone has been a member of I-A-B to how many posts?

I would love to see a couple more of these. How about one on religion?

@ Rodin: Thanks. The quintiles certainly could be adjusted as you proposed. As long as the data`s available, there are any number of options at hand. For example, one approach might have been to have the font correlate *directly* to activity and not use quintiles at all. This would have made it easier to see that CrakrJak and 5Cats really are in a category of their own in terms of quantities of posts. (It would require significantly more effort, however, and I wasn`t sure how this particular effort was going to be received.)

Also, there are statistical algorithms that could have been applied to detect and remove what appears to be a lower-left bias in the test. I thought of using one, but in the end decided against it. I thought it was better to keep things basic so that we can easily see if another political test performs better, should we do this again at some point.

HG: "Well then you didn`t really take the test and your answers are meaningless."

No, I think you misunderstand. All I did was strengthen my answers from "agree" to "strongly agree" and the like. I didn`t mathematically modify the results, understand?

drawman: "I think he should put down his weapon and back away slowly."

Being next to Angela Merkel and Mario Monti, on their scale, makes me somehow extreme? Exaggerate much?

nubblins: "+10 for not following the crowd."

    Thanks :-)

@ Rodin: In terms of another one on, say, religion, I`m not sure what tests are out there on that topic. The most popular subject for these spectrum tests, by far, is politics and that also seems to be the subject we all like discussing most (although religion is a close second).

Personally, if there`s interest, I`d like to do this again with a better political spectrum test after some time has passed. The Political Compass test is the best known of the genre, but I`ve found another that seems to have better questions.

We might get a higher participation rate on a second test too. I think a number of people were staying clear of this one out of concern that it wouldn`t be reported fairly or that it would be used to drive some agenda. I`m hoping most people are seeing now that I`m just interested in provoking some great conversations on here.

    @ LandoGriffin & Dead-Kittens: Thanks, guys!

@ Stormith: I agree regarding the tight cluster of results centered around -5,-4. I think it`s a flaw of the test, going back to which questions are and are not asked (no questions on gun control, for instance), and the way in which the questions are worded. I think a better designed test would move some of the population up higher into the Authoritarian regions and more to the Right.

The relationships of the users to one another do seem pretty accurate though, which has made the chart a lot of fun to peruse.

A ton of people complained about this test. I agree the questions weren`t set up the best.

    Instead of:

Abortion, when the woman`s life is not threatened, should always be illegal.
    - Strongly Disagree
    - Disagree
    - Agree
    - Strongly Agree

    It should be more like:

    Abortion:
    - Should be completely illegal
    - Should be allowed if the mother`s health is threatened
    - Should be allowed in cases of rape or incest
    - Should be a choice, but highly regulated and restricted
    - Should be legal without restriction
    - I have no opinion

I think questions like that would give a better representation of where you fall on the spectrum. However, I haven`t been able to find a test that is any better.

Do any of you complainers have a preferable alternative?

Bearing in mind the diversity of political, social and moral opinions of IAB users, I`d expect to see a more even distribution of the results over the entire chart.
What Squrlz4Sale`s excellent chart shows is the inaccuracy of the marking system, or ambiguity of the questions.
I would say that the bulk of IAB`ers are `middle of the road`, so a valid questionnaire would give a cluster of results around the centre of the chart.
I sincerely hope that the author of the questionnaire is not responsible for social planning decisions, or we`re all stuffed

@HolyGod: I rather like the 4 answer format: it "forces" people to pick a side! As I mentioned: it`s human nature to "drift towards the middle" and offering an "I don`t know" would REALLY lump all the people together! It`s an anonymous quiz! No harm in some "extreme" answers!

    Abortion:
    - Should be completely illegal
    - Should be allowed only if the mother`s health is threatened
(NOT: Should be allowed in cases of rape or incest)
    - Should be a choice, but regulated and restricted
    - Should be legal without restriction

There`s the "4 answer" format which would get some "swingy" replies, I think. "Rape or incest" falls under "regulated and restricted. No need to say "Heavily" since that`s implied in answer #2.

Just my opinion! Offering a suggestion.

@5Cats -- What is the point? On certain subjects around here (religion, politics, evolution, etc) if you state a certain belief you are called the "R" word. I simply don`t state my beliefs just to be baited in to insults; and I am sure many more would be the same.

However, this chart does show nicely the left bias that many of us have yelled about for YEARS. It is going to stay left biased too, because most right wingers are ran off, and simply not interested in a lot of lefty nonsense.

@papajohn & @elkingo: True! I was going to mention that:
    -in general-
Many "righties" refuse to answer such polls or give "moderate" answers to avoid trouble.
Several very large studies have shown a consistent "under reporting" of about 2% or 3% on "right wing views" in Canada and the USA (on various topics).

I`ve even heard of "poll takers" arguing with those they don`t agree with! Or deliberately leaving out the "right wing" replies...

It`s a BIG THING that`s been going on for DECADES now... at least 5 "IAB righties" said they didn`t offer their results for fear of "liberal" backlash. NOT @Squrlz4Sale`s fault!
