The Japanese would indeed have soon folded without dropping the bombs- Our government pretty much wanted to see what would happen in real world applications- that, and give a healthy `watch your p`s and q`s` to Russia.
And what war, exactly, have we won since WW11- and don`t tell me Grenada, that one was just silly.

The US had every right, and damn good reason, to drop bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. At the time here were fire bombing raids on japan, killing far far more than the bombs ever did. That wasn`t enough to make them surrender. It seems pretty damn obvious (except to the blind America hating lemmings) that the bombs saved lives by bringing a halt to the war. Otherwise the firebombing would have continued, and a invasion would have been unavoidable.

There is no denying that it saved American lives...and we weren`t the ones who started the war!

Oliver Stone`s opinions have always been idiotic. What makes people think that someone is worth listening to, just because he can make a good film?

    CaptKangaroo

"The Japanese would indeed have soon folded without dropping the bombs"

That is bullpoo. The estimates of senior members of the Japanese military is that millions of Japanese civilians or civil militia would have died defending the Japanese main islands or by suicide, in addition to all the military and the prisoners and slaves.

randomxnp - Of course tedgp knows nothing about history. He is the kind of guy that chimes in on every subject. He is usually the first to comment on every post, the comments are always negative, and never comes back to stand by his position/comment.

Eh? IDK what happened to the caption.
AND I didn`t know that video was 1 & 1/2 hours long! It didn`t load for me when I read the page.

So anyhow: Here`s a HOLLYWOOD person claiming the Atomic Bombs had nothing to do with Japan`s surrender...
Are you kidding me? WHAT an idiot!

Russia had ZERO capacity to harm Japan. They lacked long range bombers, a Pacific Fleet and any ability to land troops on a beach.
They DID have paratroopers: about 250K all total, which is really impressive.
BUT the USA and Britain and Australia were going to land 500,000 troops with FULL SUPPORT. Tanks, trucks, air cover, ship firepower = THE WORKS.

250,000 paratroopers? NAKED ones? They`d be ground to dogmeat in 2 days by Japans 5 MILLION MEN defending their homeland.

Japan was all about "saving face" and any excuse to make themselves "feel better" was used.

    Perspective: D-Day? 150,000 troops.

Yes, Russia ran over Japanese troops in China, that was entirely expected! Japan had already removed the bulk of the best troops for Home Defence. Their remaining equipment was ANCIENT!

But Russia had NO ABILITY to land their impressive tanks and artillery on Japanese soil. None. The vast majority of their air force was short or medium range, NO heavy, long range bombers (not in significant numbers, at least).

Japan`s "atomic bomb" program was actually pretty advanced. They KNEW what the atomic bombs were, and what more of them would do. THAT is why they surrendered.

@CaptKangaroo: You couldn`t be more wrong if you tried!
Japan was READY for a long siege! A prolonged invasion and continued bombing. Their ONLY hope of avoiding absolute surrender was to bleed the allies in the land invasion until they allowed some terms.
It was a good gamble for them: Nothing to lose (except millions of dead citizens and soldiers)!
And with the War In Europe over? The average American Citizen wanted the War In The Pacific over... NOW!
The USA was also facing internal strife: negros and latinos on the West Coast (especially) were one step short of violent rebellion.
ALSO: Moral among the European GIs was TERRIBLE! They expected to go home! Not to the bloodbath in Japan.

A history book or three might do YOU some good, @Captain...
