Anyone who`s seen the thick of it or in the loop knows this casting choice is awesome.

@fabarati I bow to your superior knowledge, although I feel that 11s comments were just Steven Moffat trolling the fans, he`s good at that as you know. I`m interested to hear your take on the `Should/could the doctor be a woman` question.

@sleepyhallow please read the entire thread before throwing names.

Gerry, a mirror will reveal that reincarnation as a woman is not always 100% successful...

"Why doesn`t the States make a film about Abraham Lincoln but get a woman to play him?"

The basic difference it that Lincoln was a REAL person, the Doctor is fictional.

Idiot much, Vimto?

Don`t let your grasp on reality slip completely, dude.

I`m with you on that, Vimto. Also, I would love for Jenny (the daughter, not the lizard woman`s wife) to come back, or get a spinoff or anything. There is so much room to run with that character. And, double also, it`s just the Doctor, not Dr. Who, as tsheriff so kindly pointed out.

The Corsair could regenerate into a woman, Romana was at one point Blue, 11 thought he was a woman at first and later stated point blank that they could become anything they wanted.

In one of the Radio Dramas (Exile), the Doctor had regenerated into a female (Arabella Weir). So it has happened.

Peter Cushing is"Dr.Who" I believe he is the only one of the Dr.s who actually called himself by that name.

If you want to see what would happen if The Dr. ever becomes a woman, watch the BBC charity special "Dr.Who and Curse of the Fatal Death. He finds a new setting on his ol sonic...

OK you`ve had my knee-jerk reaction which is what I`ll always give when someone, even someone I respect, jumps on the `let the Doctor regenerate as a woman` bandwagon.

Here`s my honest, geek reaction as a fan of the show since the 1970s.

it has been established (repeatedly) that there are female time lords and the doctor even travelled with one (Romana) for a few seasons. The men regenerate into men and the women regenerate into women. To suddenly change this would a) be pretty much against canon and b) would suck of pandering to a the minority who just want to kick up a stink and/or troll the fans.

Now, I would have no issue with a sister series with a female time lord - the opportunity is there, The Doctor`s Daughter was created and gave just such a chance. I would watch it. Who else would I`m not sure.

I know I`m speaking as a man, but I have many equally geeky female friends who agree.

Vimto: I`m sorry, but that doesn`t make much sense, Honest Abe doesn`t reincarnate (as far as I know at least), whilst the Doctor could be anything.

I was hoping that Joanna Lumley would be The Doctor.
She`s already done so once during a Comic Relief sketch along with Rowan Atkinson, Richard E Grant, Jim Broadbent and Hugh Grant.

True - or black... or disabled...Might also remember Sheldon Cooper`s comment that for someone who has all of time and space to travel through, he ends up in present-day London an awful lot.

I`m surprised. Maybe it`s the only way to get someone to stay longer than one series.

If Dr. Who can come back in these reincarnations, how come he`s never reborn as a woman?

Sexist much UK ?
