Living and working in the Boulder/Longmont area and having lived in North Carolina, I can tell you that we`re looking at Hippie Towns!

Looks about right. I live in Michigan, this place is a hell hole.
It`s funny though, when I go a little ways into Wisconsin you can notice right away, people are mostly smiling and polite. All you see here are a bunch of dirty, moody, pissed off rednecks dressed in realtree camo 365 days a year. . . And fat chicks.

"If the South is so remarkably unhappy, as this image would suggest, why aren`t more of us killing ourselves?"

Answer:
Religious brainwashing and indoctrination so prevalent in the Bible-Belt leads to fear of a non-existent Hades which is perceived to be worse than the hell you are already living in.

I have to disagree with the findings of this "research" (and I use that term loosely). If the South East is so unhappy, then why is the suicide rate so low.

Alaska has one of the highest Suicide rates in the United States. Wyoming has the highest suicide rate.

If the South is so remarkably unhappy, as this image would suggest, why aren`t more of us killing ourselves?

Love it where I live. Small town of 870, doesn`t get much better.

Louisiana doesn`t surprise me, that place is terrible. I am surprised at how many of the happiest cities are in California. That place is also terrible.

Im suprised mexico is more satisfied, and belgium is less satisfied.

Going by the quality of their beers that should be reversed.

Tolerance, emancipation, a working democracy (trias politica/checks & balances) and wealth equality are key factors.

That`s why social democracies (founded on social democratic and liberal principles) are scoring high in these kinds of charts.

Happiness indexes are usually incredibly dumb. They`re also terribly biased to the West. You know, happiness can exist in Africa and South America (and believe me, it does). Our definition of happiness doesn`t apply to them, just because they don`t have the same stuff we have doesn`t mean they can`t be happy. It`s just stuff. Suicide is largest in many of those countries that score highest here.

And I can guarantee that those happiest places are happy because they are almost all very beautiful places.
