Putin just banned public assembly for the Olympics.
Why do we have sympathy for this mean person again?

@drawman61 - US may not have clean hands, but it`s saintly next to Russia.

It`s ironic that Russia are asking people not to get involved in their politics considering their history of influencing other states

@jonno22, by Russia you mean the USA, surely.

"Which may all well be fine, actually. But it highlights the peculiar issue, why only Russia?"

@Andrew155 - If you think that Russia is the only country that`s been criticised for being anti-gay, you`re either paying attention selectively or you haven`t been paying attention at all.

"It doesn`t matter what the issue is, what right does rainbow pants -or any non-Russian- have in telling them how to run their country? THEIR country."

@drawman61 - The actual issue aside, criticising the actions of another country`s government is not `telling them how to run their country`.

Russia portrays itself as a modern democracy. Issues like this are created to be a smokescreen for that spunktrumpet gangster Putin and his corrupt cronies.

For a long while people have looked the other way, especially when you consider the international criticism of the US, Russia has had it easy.

That`s an outdated concept of statehood based on Westphalian ideas of international relations and state sovereignty. Globalization has blurred the lines of state borders, as has increased transnational communications.

It`s ironic that Russia are asking people not to get involved in their politics considering their history of influencing other states` politics. It`s particularly ironic that gay people in other countries aren`t allowed to talk about what`s happening to gay people in Russia, since the whole idea of Communist Russia was for workers to unite worldwide and overthrow corrupt governments.

@andrew155, Indians? There is a old sodomy law, leftover from the British occupation days. That is not actively pursued. Nothi g in the Hindu religion or Indian political manifesto is even remotely anti gay.

Because stupid people still think the Cold War is going on and Russia is still "the Enemy". I don`t know how I feel about this. I hate when anyone comes onto a program like this and starts ranting, even if I agree with some of what they are saying. I just don`t know...

The message is that it`s ok to be biblically anti-gay if you are Arab/African/Indian, but if Russia adopts a law that`s even a few magnitudes less oppressive than the norm in those previous cultures, it will be the biggest fracking deal ever on the internet, Obama will specifically mention it, and the media will have a hernia over it.
