Matthew 18: 7-9 "Woe to the world because of the things that cause people to stumble! Such things must come, but woe to the person through whom they come! If your hand or your foot causes you to stumble, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life maimed or crippled than to have two hands or two feet and be thrown into eternal fire. And if your eye causes you to stumble, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to enter life with one eye than to have two eyes and be thrown into the fire of hell.
Lobotomies for all.

Every time a religious fire is started I am reminded of this:

At my Church, if you publicly embrace and continue to practice things which are bad for you and the community, you get told off publicly, and eventually, yes, you get shunned. Any of the sins will do. Its accepted to have told a lie for example, we are human and seek mercy and forgiveness (all sins are equally bad, not just sexual ones), but not accepted to say `Yeah Im a lair, Im not gonna change that, and yall should get with my lying program`. Then you have no reason to be there anymore except to fight against all that the Church was created for. Obviously you will not be welcome with this attitude. I dont think this is odd or fanatical, it common sense. Churches exist for a purpose after all, and its not to congratulate people for doing whatever they feel like doing. You dont need Church for that, plenty of other groups for you if thats your thing. Pastors can often be wrong about such judgements, they have human failings too, blanket condemnations on both sides not neccesary thanks

One more example of mankind twisting God to suit its own needs. Even you guys that admit changing churches are guilty of cherry picking, IMO.
Remember to leave a big donation on your way out the door.

There was a wonderful comedy sketch I remember from the 80`s with Rowan Atkinson about being a gay christian.
The punch-line at the end sums it up.

god`s like that, he hates p**fs

That would be an easy decision for me to make. My daughter comes first and I wouldn`t want to be part of a community that asked me to cut off my daughter and the person she loved.

@ledzeppeloyd,
That`s not a reason to be an atheist. I`m also an atheist but it`s because I don`t believe in any gods, not because there are thick headed, self-righteous religious people out there. After all, there are plenty of thick headed, self righteous atheists out there, too!

If I were them, I wouldn`t feel too bad about this. Seriously, do they really want to stay with these bigots?

Separation of church and state goes both ways. It`s their little club let them chose who they let in.

I agree with all the comments so far. Why would a family want to attend a church that treats them this way? Why not find a church that is more in line with your personal faith?

My family and I actually switched churches a couple of years ago over similar disagreements. We used to be Catholic but couldn`t stand any more of their exclusionary attitude and hypocrisy when they defended their child molesters. Soon afterward, the frikken POPE himself abdicated over the exact same problems, so we`re in good company. First Pope to abdicate in over 500 years or something like that.

This is why I so hate Religion. Not belief, not faith. Religion...with a capital R. That is, the institutions of religion that tell you who, what, where, and when to believe. That tell you how you MUST live your life. The institution of religion, pretty much any religion, is really just a legitimized dictatorship. Have religion if it gives you peace and comfort, but be very careful about letting Religion into your life.

"Hating the church for making the decision is just as bad as the church hating the mom because of the decision she made."

No it isn`t. The church is composed of ignorant, hateful hillbillies, so disliking them is perfectly justified. Stupid people deserve vilification.

I`m with Gerry, they can kick out who they want. Any private institution should be allowed to hold whatever values and rights they decide, including the right to be a pack of bigoted c*ntmuscles.

I have no problem with this.
Churches can segregate any portion of the population they choose for whatever reason they think is good. It is not for the guv`ment or any non-members of the church to decide for them.

I wouldn`t attend there, but it`s good to have all the ignorant haters in one place. I know where to avoid them.

While the Church has a right to do what they did, and should have that right, they`ve kind of missed the point on the Book of James.

I feel like the God I serve both made and loves gay people. That being said, we live in a nation that people have the freedom to believe or not believe whatever they want. No matter if it hurts your feelings or not.

When those beliefs start to impact legal policy, then we have a problem.

i hate my drating high and mighty fellow americans who always feel the need to criticize others. why don`t we just let other people make their own decisions and not try to butt in? this goes for Russia too - their national policy is NONE of our business and anyone who thinks it is makes a COMPLETE ass out of themselves

Why not go to a different church? This one obviously does not hold the same values as their ex-members.

Seems like finding a different church would be a win-win.
