This is not Denmark your bike can`t protect you from objects and terrible weather or achieve anywhere the same speed as a car. Get out of the friggen road you`re pissing everyone that has to be somewhere off.

@McGovern: Why don`t you wake up thirty minutes earlier, get your hands off your junk, stop wanking it to cat pr0n, and plan out your day a little more proactively?

Imagine if you simply didn`t have a car. What on earth would you do? Sob quietly at home as your fat grew into the couch fabric?

Yes because what applies to a country with 1.8% of the US`s landmass, and 0.4% of our population, is relevent in any way.

McGovern- you are talking to the back of my head. I ride all year round as I don`t drive- rain, snow, sleet- I still have to work so off I go.I live rurally too- so no bike lanes or flat surfaces! Not in poncy lycra but in my clothes- jeans usually but if fine a skirt. I reckon I do 10 miles to a sandwich and I thoroughly recommend it.

Well cause it would take longer than 30 minutes on a bike hippy. How about Eco nazis stp telling people what to ride to work and peddle off a cliff? We don`t all want to get up at 5:00am and ride in s**ty weather cause not only does it suck we`d have to deal with people like you.

I`ll just put a trailer on the back of my bike to haul sentive electronic equipment to service calls. I`m sure my employer will love the extra time it takes to travel all over the state... WHEW granola munchers are thick!!

I travel 150 miles a day just for my job. Most people around me work at least 30 miles away from where they live. Cars are a necessity around here.

I got an electric bike. It`s fun.
When I`m tired of pedaling I switch to the motor.
Saves me about 60-70 dollars in gas a month.

I bike when I`m in Holland with my Dutch girlfriend, I don`t when I`m in America. It`s not as feasible in most places in America. Especially in Florida in Summer, I don`t want to show up to work with a wet shirt.

You can do it if you live downtown and work downtown, but the fact is that most American downtowns are decrepit because of the policies of those inner-city politicians (no, I don`t mean black, race baiters. I mean inner-city politicians who have ruined most one great American cities like Chicago and Detroit).

I ride a bike for recreation and exercise.

I do not consider it, in any way, to be a viable means of transportation for anything other than recreation.

The reasons it is not viable for me:
    Too far to work.
    Too much junk to carry.
I live in Da South, where the summer temps and humidity both approach upper 90`s (today`s temp, 101°...and we only have two seasons...Summer and Winter...this year Winter was scheduled for Jan. 12th from noon till three.) I do not feel like taking a shower at work.
I live in the city with the HIGHEST annual rainfall in the US.

This always makes me laugh. These countries are bike cultures because they are the size of Rhode Island. I am about 30 minutes from work by car. If I were to do it on bike I`d be looking at a minimum of an hour commute one way.

I also ride for recreation and I walk and ride to everything around my town, but to consider not having a car and strictly riding a bike is ridiculous.

I live in copenhagen actually, so let me provide some insight.

Parking in the inner city is HORRIBLE. You might come across an empty space once or twice a week..

Rush hour traffic is also HORRIBLE. Bikes literally overtake the huge queues of cars.

    There are bike lanes everywhere.

Because of all this, it is much easier and most often alot faster to travel by bicycle if you`re just traveling within the inner city. Lots of people don`t even have cars anymore.

If you`re traveling far, you just take public transport (which is much better over here than what i`ve heard of the US). There are even bicycle stands in the trains, so you can bring your bike along.

So yes, life is a lot easier if you just ride bikes instead.

How quickly we see the rather bitter sad ones come out to play lL. Those of us who cycle for transport rather than sport tend not to wear lycra- it would mean we have to carry work clothes. I carry my equipment in a rucksack- and yes, of course there are times and places when a bike is not appropriate- but the naysayers might find that if they swapped the car for a bike when doing the shopping, or buying a paper they would cheer up a bit. Nothing like tiring yourself out in the wind and rain to improve your mood. Certainly makes you fit!

I cycle to the pub every day. It`s a 5-mile round trip along the river/field path. The trip takes 2 pints of beers` worth of calories, gives me exercise , keeps the blood pressure lower and keeps the doctor happy. My ride is 99% off-road on pleasantly undulating land, with the opportunity to observe the wild-life.
I use my 12 year old astra estate for shopping, commuting etc.
Because I ride a bike, I have respect for other bike-riders on the road. Admittedly there are a number of idiots; these people will give up cycling because it is `too dangerous`, and go on to become the idiots in cars who cause injury to bikers through inconsideration for their fellow road-user.
Round my way they are typically German-car owners, with a sprinkling of French and the just-plain-stupid.

I presently commute by bike 50 miles daily. hot - cold - rain - shine. I am fit and healthy and don`t need to spend my evenings in a gym trying to work off the extra lbs I get from sitting on my backside.
The vast majoroty of cars I see every day recognise me, wave and leave me extra room as they know they are going to pass me in the same place every day. When I see comments like your mcgovern it make me want to keep an extra bike chain in my pocket.

Poor old McGovern, they treat him so harshly!
When he was young, he never mastered riding a bicycle without stabiliser wheels. The other children laughed at him and called him names, giggling behind his back.
`Don`t worry dear`, his mom said, `you`ll be old enough to drive a car one day`. So, secure in that knowledge, he waited patiently until he had his own car.
`I`ll teach them to laugh at me`, he growled as he sat on the edge of his bed looking wistfully at the second-hand car papers, `I`ll get my own back! they`ll regret they ever messed with me!
Poor old McGovern. He`s pushing 40, and they still laugh at him: `Look at old chubby, I bet he wishes he`d tried harder with the bicycle`.
McGovern scowled, as puffing and blowing he loaded another five 40lb bags of cat litter into the trunk.
`I hate you all, and I`m still faster than you, so get out of my way!`
The camera pans from away from a hunched embittered middle-aged man to focus on a group of fit bronz

I have balls so coffee for me which also brings up why bike seats suck because I possess balls which don`t enjoy bike seats.

Ooh you brute! It`s so unfair the way you all pick on me! I`ve got a car! I`m a man! (sniff, sob, etc.)

One of the advantages of being fit, healthy and well muscled, is that you get first pick of the women. They simply love the attention of a man in good breeding condition. The ones that don`t get the beef end up as cushion-covers in the passenger -seat of a penis substitute, being shown off as a trophy by a limp lardy with a grudge.

I`m so sick of this "Americans choose to be lazy" bullpoo. What works there doesn`t work here because IT`S TOO BIG!!! You don`t drive Suburbans because they wouldn`t fit your tiny ass little streets that were constructed for freakin horse carriages 400 years ago. Your entire country is the size of one of the 40 counties in my state. My place of business is far enough from my house I drive the equivalent of your country`s border to get to work.

You think you`re doing it as a healthy choice or an environmentally conscious choice. Bullcrap. You do it because it makes sense with the space constraints of your countries.

Kain1-"So yes, life is a lot easier if you just ride bikes instead."

    Yes, in copenhagen it is.

This has absolutely nothing to do with its viability in the US.

Nickel2-"knowing his tea will be cold when he gets home"

Sorry, tea is SUPPOSED to be cold. Sweet Ice tea is our drink.

If we want a hot drink, we go with coffee.

NNoamfer-"but here we have bike lanes everywhere"

We don`t. Probably 1% of the roads have bike lanes. And bikers in the US tend to think traffic laws don`t apply to them. That red-lights are for cars only, and crosswalks are just obstacle courses.

If I had a corolla as a penis substitute I would be seriously worried about my penis!
Anyway, I think we`ve taken the piss out of the poor delicate over-sensitive lardies long enough on the subject of bicycling, so it`s time to move on and see what else winds `em up!
I`m not a tower of bronzed musculature, but another fat middle-aged european who rides a bike to the pub on a daily basis. The only reason I keep writing this stuff is to pop the balloons of superiority inflated by insecure bullies.
So, my apologies to `auto` drivers everywhere. Please enjoy your cars, but learn that you are not the only ones who pay taxes; in the land of the free, you are all free to do what you wish as long as you do not oppress other free people that are exercising their freedom.

That`s because you`d need a sports car for the micropenis down there. I`ll bet you`re vegan or vegitarian too you know how I can tell....

    @NNoamfer
No bike lanes except in yuppie land around me like Cambridge and I think some of Boston. The problem is they just drew them over 1/4 of the road not helping anything actually making it worse and making everyone with some place to be want to run over the stupid hippies on bikes.
