It`s like people hate critical thinking skills. Think hard to yourself, what does this measure? Government spending. Government initiatives. It completely ignores the strange notion that Americans can do things without the government - like invent the motherfracking airplane.

But anyhow, compare to other countries. It turns out that the grass isn`t always greener outside America. At least not yet.

Also, this incredibly idiotically ignores DoD research. You like those cell phones you got? Thank the DoD. You like the Internet? Thank the Cold War and the DoD. You like Radar? Thank the British Ministry of Defense.

Microwaves, GPS, Digital Photography, Jet Engine, Nuclear Technology, Walkie-Talkies (thank you Canada), First Electronic Computer? Thank the DoD, Nazi Germany, the UK, and others.

lol Andrew... now divide those figures by population and see if America still comes out on top.

For example publications... America has 21 to UK`s 7... but America has 300M to UK`s 60M. Same deal with citations...

    Better question:

How much do you think the constitution says tax payers should put toward science?

beternal - I really didn`t want to compare different countries as I think a significant collection of Western nations are all doing much for innovation and science, but if you wish to play that game than here. There are so many different graphs showing these trends.

Europe, with double the US population, has less total patents. On a per-person basis, we are about the same as Germany and Sweden. I do give Germanic Europe the props they deserve.

@Andrew155 but we have to take note of the difference between the EU and the USA. So very very different country to country comparisons make a hella lot more sense then saying the EU has a bigger population it should have more... the EU is not a federalist block. It has also taken loads of countries in which shouldn`t have had to play catch up to the western nations. The patent thing is also plenty of unified countries rising up to the status their population implies they should be.

Come come now Andrew, patents are a poor proxy for scientific output of a country. Any old crackpot sh*t of an invention can get patented, especially in the US. Some examples here:

@Andrew155 You have missed the ENTIRE point. It isn`t about who created what or who does better than the other. It is about the ignorance of the American populace thinking that putting money into the space program/NASA is a big waste of money even though barely ANY of tax payer dollars ever reach NASA.

This study shows that many people incorrectly assume NASA’s budget is 20% of the total US budget. In reality, funding for NASA is only represents 0.6%! The entire history of NASA does not add up to the amount spent on the military in a single year.

A step in the right direction would be relabeling it the Department of the MILITARY. Defense has been used as a horrific euphemism.

Yes, the NASA budget is low. And has continued to be slashed. We still do more than any other Western nation. The fact is a Democracy has a hard time justifying more space spending to voters who want more social spending. However, we now have private space companies, which is completely missed by these numbers. Their share will drastically increase in the years to come.

And also, the DoD number includes not just tons of research, but also tons of space exploration. The Air Force sends more stuff into space these days than Nasa, and Air Force space command has double the employees. However, they were hit the hardest by the Sequester. So the recent military cuts went mostly against the space stuff.

We owe the AF for GPS, advances in communications technology, state of the art weather and climate data, and future advances we don`t yet know about.

@OldIdiotOllie spewed "How much do you think the constitution says tax payers should put toward science?"

Pretty much the same as it says to put toward military spending. IT DOESN`T SPECIFY. Article I, Section 8, Clause 1 of the Constitution (the Taxing and Spending Clause) states "Congress shall have Power To lay and collect Taxes, Duties, Imposts and Excises, to pay the Debts and provide for the common Defence and general Welfare of the United States". It is left to Congress to prioritize between "common Defence" and "general Welfare."

Patent laws have a lot to do with the number of patents per year in a country.

You know how in your 401k you can say "I want 10% to go in this fund and 20% in that fund and so forth"? I want that for my taxes. I want to be able to say I want x% for defense and y% for NASA etc etc. Then you crazy lefties can put all you rtax money into your crazy government programs and I can put mine towards things that will actually accomplish something (heh heh!)! SOrry, but I don`t trust either party to do what`s right with my tax money anymore. I want to do that. Oh, and make it aflat %15 while you`re at it!
